Re: Keeler Fired from DMR

700 people getting laid off is a bad thing, also the demise of newspapers in this country is also a bad thing.

Also, if they replace the entire sports page, will there be any local coverage anymore?

What is bad IS . . . that many of those failing newspapers are doing so because they have turned into hard left rags. America is still a conservative majority.

I will subscribe to the DSM rag when they start presenting a "fair and balanced" view. Nevertheless, conservatives are dismissed out of hand . . . SO THE REALITY IS . . they still don't get it . . and are doomed to financial failure.

Their editorials always lean hard left. Their top fold pieces always seem to spell the plight of some poor afflicted group of malcontents. In short, It sucks to be them.

It also sucks to be Keeler . . . but in all fairness . . his formula is so predictable (i.e. embarrass and ridicule, caustic view of ISU, etc.).

BTW . . He should also should have been writing MORE columns every month.

Keeler was a boring writer. Who cares if he bashed ISU... or if he bashed Iowa...

The guy had LAME *** takes on sports. I extremely glad he is gone.

Guys like Keeler are why newspapers are dying. Nobody wants to read .... and pay to read.... their horrible stories.

So, Keeler's take on ISU athletics was good exposure?

Yes. Keeler gave them a fair shake, he wasn't a cheerleader, but he wasn't a hater either. He wrote many, many complimentary articles and was usually fair. And he was one of the few columnists who wasn't scared to write something bad about Iowa. If you think Keeler was some terrible columnist out to get Iowa State, your way off base. Definitely wasn't a great writer though.

Do you really celebrate when hundreds of people get laid off and the state of Iowa loses its only position dedicated to covering the instate colleges? This is bad news for sports fans.

This thread is about one person, and I am unabashedly satisfied that one person got fired. This is the opposite of bad news for ISU sports fans.

Everything you wrote is entirely wrong. He's admitted he doesn't like ISU.

So who's job at the Rag now is it to **** all over ISU?

Why does it matter to you anyway? No doubt you'll be ******** and moaning that the next sports opinion columnist at the DMR doesn't fawn over ISU and talk about how we're the greatest ******* athletic department in college sports history after his or her very first column, if indeed they find someone to take Keeler's place.

I'm probably in the minority, Hell, I know I'm in the minority, but I will miss reading Keeler. I got a certain amount of grim satisfaction/bemusement/irritation of seeing how the posters here who equate being an opinion columnist with a mouthpiece for Iowa State athletics reacted to his columns that didn't kiss ISU's *****.

Best of luck to you Sean, I for one think you're talented and will miss your take in the DMR.

Irrelevant. Nothing I wrote was about whether or not he liked ISU, I wrote about his work. He gave us a fair shake and was one of the few columnists who wrote anything bad about Iowa. Way more positive than negative columns, and that's saying something given the sorry state of our athletics in the Mcdermott/ end of Dmac and Chizik era.

He wasn't a great writer, thats defiintely true. But you guys who think he had some evil agenda against ISU and had it in for us? That Keeler was attacking ISU? Please. He tossed softballs.

No. You are wrong. I specifically remember reading his very first column (which was more or less an introduction to readers who he was) where he mentioned following ISU football as a kid.

Exactly. I honestly think some ISU fans don't understand the concept of an opinion columnist, and they are the ones who consistently took offense to anything Keeler wrote.

Very few people care about the opinion of an opinion columnist when you can get online and be bombarded with opinions of every type for free.

Yep . . you are in the minority . . especially after telling all us other ISU what we've never said or implied. I bet you really enjoyed his piece, a couple of years ago, about ISU's mediocre performance in the bowl game (Minnesota) ALL THE WAY FROM frickin Florida where the Hawks were destined for greatness. . yah, he really doesn't deserve criticism.

Maybe you journalism types might take a lesson or two from all this . . columnists who "dig" at the local sports programs don't do so well in the long run. Remember GIGGLES?

He did do better the last couple of years but by then . . he had burned so many bridges with ISU . . nobody really cared.

Dude, your poster handle is Madclone, and everything you've ever written is very accurate of that handle. I don't think I've seen one post from you that is ever positive or happy, and you're consistently complaining about some sort of wrong done to ISU, whether real or imagined.

As for what I "implied", I've read this board enough and seen enough reaction to Keeler's columns to stand by everything I wrote in regards to how a vocal minority here overreacts to the written word of an opinion columnist, and I won't apologize to you or anyone else for it.

Sorry but this post is quite wrong.

Failure of print has to do with lack of embracing social media/alternate forms of getting the product out there.

Not silly red versus blue.
