If I was unemployed I would take it and work my tail off to make it happen. Doubt if I would give up a good job for that one though.

Obviously if you're unemployed person in the sports media industry you're happy for a job. But honestly, the insecurity in your job for the people working on that network launch must be unbelievable.

Does anybody remember the Big Ten Network the first year? You couldn't get the newtwork in East Lansing, Ann Arbor, Iowa City, or most other Big Ten markets. Everybody thought it was going to be a huge failure. I imagine it will be a tough first year for the Long Horn Network as well; however, I am sure it will be succesful long term.

Here's hoping the remaining 9 Big XII teams get together and form their own network. Go Cyclones!!!

The difference though is that when BTN was launched it was unprecedented. You would think, and I'm sure ESPN did, that at least one big carrier in Texas would be picking this thing up in anticipation of the demand.

Directv had the Big 10 network on it's standard tier on day 1 of launch, so they had something like 20 million homes right there alone.
Their first tier? Really? Hell, dishnetwork relagates this to the sports tier, and rightfully so. Why would DirectTV want all their customers to see this garbage? I am sorry, the programming on that station is atrocious. WE is more watchable.

Correction.....

LHN does have one carrier. EnTouch, a smaller company in the Houston market, has picked up the LHN, but in standard def only.

Supposedly the LHN is very, very close to deals with Verizon Fios and one other major carrier.

Looks like VTech's AD doesn't think much of our expansion chances...

Jim Weaver talking about expansion just referred to Kansas State, Iowa State, ... , Big 12 leftovers as "also-rans".

Who would be #4 in that scenario? Mizzou? Okie-State? A Big East team?

That being said, how about this for a Big 10 conference?

Plains:
Nebraska
Kansas
Oklahoma
Texas

Midwest:
Iowa
Iowa State
Minnesota
Wisconsin

Central:
Northwestern
Illinois
Indiana
Purdue

Eastern:
Michigan
Michigan State
Penn State
Ohio State

All the blood rushes away from my brain when I imagine that scenario. ISU would be looking at 40 million a year in TV money.

What does this mean?

It means academically, enrollment, and facility wise ISU and friends are on par with any of those other schools, but we can't generate the TV revenue that other schools can. Therefore, unless you're a school like Vandy, Washington State, or Northwestern who are already locked in with their friends, the almighty dollar has declared some universities "also-rans."

As I was talking with one of my friends last week, this article is exactly what I told my friend should happen if the NCAA had someone in charge...redraw the entire conference maps so that geographic rivalries are renewed and the student athlete phrase shifts back a tad toward the student side. I know this has 0% chance of ever happening, but I'd do this if I were in charge.

Texas A&M in the SEC? a Sensible Realignment Proposal for the NCAA | Bleacher Report

Nebraska invades Penn State. Colorado battles Oregon State. TCU takes on Providence. These are some of the exciting new match-ups that we will see as the latest round of NCAA musical chairs takes effect. What do these pairs of newly acquainted conference foes have in common?
A) Separated by less than 1,000 miles
B) Situated the same time zone
C) Can easily find direct commercial flights between nearest airports
D) None of the above
The correct answer is, of course, D.
As the Power Conferences continue to hog more power, their regional namesakes have become less and less relevant. How does one gerrymander a map such that the Big East can claim Milwaukee and Fort Worth as eastern cities? What exactly does the view of the Pacific Ocean look like from Colorado and Utah?
More important than the geographic inconsistencies is the travel toll on the student athletes. In the current configuration, teams such as Boston College and Louisiana Tech are already a flight away from every conference road game; there will now be several other schools whose representatives will carry the same burden. If Missouri or Texas A&M joins the SEC, they too will have a painful travel schedule. There must be a better way to keep the airlines in business.
The NFL, NBA and NHL have all realigned divisions within the last 15 years for improved scheduling efficiency and reduced travel for players. The NCAA needs to consider a similar measure, and here is a proposal for review.

Here was ISU's proposed conference...

The Midwest Conference

East Division

  • Arkansas
  • Arkansas State
  • Iowa
  • Iowa State
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska

West Division

  • Air Force
  • Colorado
  • Colorado State
  • Kansas
  • Kansas State
  • Tulsa
