umm..it is only a matter of time before Sherman implodes. Ask people in Green Bay.
If someone were to check the College Football Data Warehouse, I'm pretty sure A&M was the best in the south when the Big 12 formed, top 10, like 1 or 2 loss seasons. I think former ISU assistant Jackie Sherrill was the HC at least part of that time.People are acting like theyre going to be 2-10 there every year. They also assume TAMU will always be as down as they have been in the last 10 years. Prior to 2000 they spent a lot of time in the top 20 for the prior 25 years, and they feel they're building back to that. They certainly have the resources, they just made a bad hire in franchione that made the 00s down for them.

Texas beating Nebraska for the first conference title was a fairly big upset, and likely cost NU the the national title as I recall.
OU was also down, barely top 20; I think OSU was about as good or better.
Besides Nebraska, Colorado also won a national title not long before the Big 12 formed, and KSU similarly was at or about to become a consistent top 10 team. Texas rose, and of course OU, but the North was the toughest at first, and I'm pretty sure A&M was the best in the South and top 10 when the conference formed.
I agree that Sherman will probably not prove to be "the guy" that turns A&M around, but to alarson's point, A&M has all the necessary resources to compete at the same level that Arkansas does in the SEC. They have lots of money, great facilities, they are in a huge state that is loaded with recruits. They have some great tradition and they will have a unique story to tell recruits in Texas if they go to the SEC.
They can compete, if and when they find a very good coach.
I agree they will fare about as well as Arkansas has. But I wouldn't call that success. By the looks of it, Arkansas is 127-97-2 overall, 72-76-2 in conference, and has no conference titles. It ain't terrible but it ain't great either.
They have also played in the SEC championship game a couple times in the past 5 years, played in a BCS game, had a couple of Heisman candidates, and have their highest pre-season ranking in several years this year. Their history may not be great, but they have risen to the challenge in the SEC and are a program to contend with. Under Houston Nutt they were a flash in the pan with McFadden, but Petrino is reloading this team vs. rebuilding now.
Yes, arkansas is doing better now but kansas was doing pretty good under mangino. How they doing now? You can pick out high points for any team. What does history say?
"Rampant speculation on conference expansion occurs, and changes, on a daily basis," senior associate athletic director E.J. Borghetti said in an e-mail to the Tribune-Review. "It would not be productive or responsible to add to that speculation by commenting."
Interesting.
But if Pitt said that what would we have to talk about?Yeah... it wouldve been easy just to say 'we've had no contact from the big 12'
Couple questions on the BYU speculations - does anyone know if they were invited to the Pac 10 in the last go round and 2) why they turned that down if they were?
Does BYU really think they are going to force the terms of entry with the likes of Texas and ND? Doubt it. This is why I find it unlikely the big 12 finds a suitable expansion partner that solidifies anything long term, any team other than ND teams we court will think they have leverage and egos will not stand for that.
Finally, if BYU does in fact join - does this kill our chances of enjoying a beer that was purchased inside the stadium?
Also, does anyone find it incredibly risky to publicly appeal to 3 major teams that if turned down, will solidify the big 12's position as a conference that is likely to be realigned? I am all for getting after it, by why the sources, the leaks, etc. Just do your thing and if it works out shock us all and put us back on the map
