Summer 2010: I never thought Super Conferences would form.

Summer 2011: I still never thought Super Conferences would form.

September 2011: Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

How long until the government intervention and other expansion opportunities outside of football causes these leagues to go to 18 and above?

Nova wavered for a long time, but when they finally said yes to the Big East in late spring, it was too late because Pitt and West Virginia were opposed to playing in a 30K soccer stadium.

Whoever they would've got to get to 10, I think they would've added Army/Navy to get to 12 FB schools without adding BB schools.

Anyways, in the hypothetical 10 team leftovers conference, adding those Army/Navy would make a lot of sense.

- If the other 3 Super Conferences enact a Pac-12 esque Out-Of-Conference scheduling rule, forbidding teams from playing non-league games past week 3, you can kiss away any opportunity to be an independent.

This is what might force ND's hand such that they HAVE to join a conference whether they want to or not. Like lots of things, they just have to THINK it might happen because if they don't move now once things are sorted out it might be impossible for them to move later. That's what Pitt/Syr were trying to avoid by jumping early. Jumping early means you can control your own destiny. Not saying ND is going to join the B10 just that anyone who states "ND will never join a conference" might end up eating crow. Until this sorts itself out all bets are off and what used to be unthinkable might just become reality.

I agree ISU's chances to the Big 10 got better all of a sudden (but still slim) but does KU part ways with KSU in this? I find it very hard to believe KU will join the Big 10 without KSU even if KSU's academics suck.

Hmm, let's see here - If the B1G is Kansas' only real option, you think the Kansas regents are going to continue to take the stand that they MUST take K-State with them and watch BOTH major universities be destroyed in oblivion? I highly doubt it.

There is not a chance KU can bring K-State with them to the B1G - K-State just doesn't have the academic repertoire to fit. And Kansas legislature (I seriously hope) isn't dumb enough to allow both of their universities to become irrelevant.

For you guys reading this thread back around posts in the 3,000 or 4,000 range, remember that quote from the A&M chancellor (I think) who said that conferences are going to be at 18-20 teams in the future.

He knew something about how this was likely to turn out. I think conferences are jumping to add schools now by choice before a higher power intervenes and logically places the rest of teams into conferences.

I like how you guys are trying to argue for the logical nature of ISU to the Big16, but I really don't think the Big 10 is adding anybody until 2015/16. As somebody posted before, they claim they aren't expanding soon

Big Ten Commissioner Says No Change Is Imminent - NYTimes.com

And they're one of the few people I actually believe in this if they come out with a public statement. They don't really need to expand to 14 or 16.

And the SEC wasn't expanding until they accepted A&M. Just like the ACC with Syracuse and Pitt.

There is a lot of wiggle room in his comment. If the ACC, PAC, and SEC are at 16, the Big 10 will expand. It will happen just like this weekend. Nobody will have any clue and suddenly 4 teams will have applied.

New Conference Alignments

With the most recent news, I think the real outcome will be a bigger upheaval than a question of Big East/Big 12. I think this represents a very likely scenario for outcome within 2 weeks.

With Pitt & Syracuse joining ACC, UConn is on their way to ACC, and one other member (Rutgers, Louisville) will follow. ACC is now maxed out at 16

West Virginia will go to SEC. SEC now sits at 14 with odd number of teams in divisions - not huge deal but not perfect. I think they stand pat for now.

Big 10 stays put. None of the additions out their get them enough households or prestige to make a difference and because of their collective strength they don't feel a need to follow the other guys.

Notre Dame stays independent once again.

By Wednesday of this week, OU, OSU will be members of the Pac 14.

Texas, Texas Tech, Missouri, ISU, KU, KSU, & Baylor vote to remain together and collect exit penalties. Big 12 skims balance of Big East & Mountain West to get back to at least 12 teams.

If we go to 12 we will add:

Louisville
Cincinnati
TCU
Boise State
BYU

If we go to 14 we will add:

Louisville
Cincinnati
TCU
Boise State
BYU
Air Force or Memphis
Nevada or Houston

New Big 12 Divisions at 16 Teams will look similar to this:

North
ISU
KU
KSU
MU
Louisville
Boise State
Cincinnati
Memphis

South
Texas
TTU
TCU
BYU
Air Force
Nevada
Houston

Big East will dissolve. New Mountain West will be further downgraded and may absorb top half of WAC.

You heard it hear first. Welcome to our new conference friends to the new Big 12 conference which will be renamed to reflect our new composition.

To those who say that a Big East/12 conference sans UT And OU will not be an AQ conference, please show me the documentation showing this. The Big East remained AQ with only 5 schools 6 years ago. The Big 12 would be able to do the same if 5 remained. It wouldn't matter who the teams are. Losing AQ status is VERY difficult. And with one less conference, it would get even more difficult. Go to the BCS website and read a little bit about how the BCS works.

Same university source who told me Dana was getting hired--& was spot-on re: everything--says WVU sent paperwork to SEC today. We'll see.

You're right. The conferences wouldn't lose AQ status until it was time for review (2013).
