Cyclone newcomer Royce White had one of the strongest bench press test outs in mbb history. White benched 185 pounds 22 times. The next closest Cyclone had 14 reps.

That's good stuff, although it doesn't mean **** when it comes to the game. Kevin Durant couldn't even do 1 rep of that but look at what he can do. If it was directly translatable to the game, tons of body builders and olympic lifters would be amazing scorers.

Good numbers, well done Royce but who gives a ****?

Weight room numbers mean nothing without knowing what form is used. For example, in the bench press, is the athlete doing full reps and locking out at the top, or just going 3/4 of the way up? Is he bouncing the bar off his chest? Does his rear end come off the bench? Are all reps totally unassisted?
I'd have to see before I buy numbers.
If White did that many reps in perfect form, then as has been said, with his long arms, that's great.

If you ever watch the NFL combine, you would know that they bounce the bar off their chest like crazy. It's just like 40 times, everything's inflated. But it isn't a power lifting contest, so I'm not sure it really matters. Just a friendly contest among the players and something to tweet to the fans.

The NCAA was going to let Royce play this year if he got 23... to bad he just missed it.

Oh well, we'll be strong in '11.

Hopefully this translates to a "strong" performance on the court. There are a lot of really good basketball players that probably don't do all that well in the bench press.

That's great for Royce. Good to see the improvement. Hopefully the rest of the guys are making strides also. I guess my question would be, if he is doing 28 reps @ 185 why don't they have him rep at 225 like the big boys do it? Who cares how the NBA has guys rep out at combines. The NBA guys are *******.

I would guess that it is more about toned muscles than bulk which is what you get when you do more reps or less weight but I'm just guessing.

For those interested in what Royce's estimated one rep max at the bench press is. I have posted it in the "Royce White Is At It Again (Good News)" thread. I say estimated because multiple things come into play to actually hit that weight versus a lower weight for higher reps. I figure we just let the all-american tough guys debate the good old days. Not even going to explain the importance of a bench press in relation to basketball. They "seem" to know.

It's done at 185 because the old data is at 185. I agree, as strong as these guys are 225 would be a better test. Granted, many guys would be at zero when freshmen. You have to set the bar somewhere and 185 is what's been done.

I think Kevin Durant probably would have a tough time benching 225 at the combine.

No matter what anyone says 185- 28 times (per Royce and Fred Hoibergs twitter ) is impressive. The kid is a man child. Sure, it doesnt directly correlate to dominance, but he is gonna be a force down low with the skills to take his game outside the lane, no matter what he benches. End of Story.

doing any weight 28 times is tough in itself, because your muscles get fatigued. So not only does he have strength, but the endurance is the impressive part.
