Is it just me, or does it seem like he's begging them to let him finish out the season?

I thought that right away as well. Basically saying don't worry about me and go on with your business.

Actually, it sounds like he's almost comanding them to not fire him now. He thinks he deserves the right to leave on his own terms, which is BS.
The Trustees need to man the eff up and end this, no matter what Paterno says.
Of course, they probably wont, because doing that probably hurts the university more. Firing Paterno now, might cause him to stop supporting the university. It might also cause Paterno supporters to stop donating money.

If any of the Trustees have children, I hope they do the right thing.

NOt only that. There was something in the finding of fact that implied the university lawyer who handled the original complaint was eventually hired and retained to work for Sandusky's charity.

I think we are going to find out that the victims were paid to keep quiet and staff people at Penn State were paid to keep quiet. Sandusky was ushered out the door ("retired") and the university thought they took care of it. Guess not. There was big money in the football program and the charity and big money makes people behave in odd ways.

There is a whole lot of STINK surrounding this situation. I'm thinking that the confluence of money, influence and preserving the "image" of Penn State led people to do some terrible things. I'm sure a bunch of quality attorneys are lining up trying to get the victims together for a massive civil suit. There's reasonable evidence of a cover-up just from some of the facts that are currently public, never mind what would likely be discovered in a full-scale investigation.

Here's what I want for Christmas:

1. Joe Paterno is fired/put on leave immediately by the board of trustees
2. Penn State loses out
3. Trustees decline any bowl invite
4. NCAA decimates PSU due to the coverup perpetrated in the name of PSU and their football team

Agree with the first one. But I don't see the need to punish the student-athletes who had nothing to do with any of this. Get rid of the AD, Prez, Buisiness guy, JoePA, and the grad studnet and be done with it. No good will be done by punishing the players.

Re: Paterno to retire at seasons end

Is this a real thing or is that something someone made up like one of those wikipedia entries?? Did that piece of human garbage actually write a book called "Touched"?

Yes, that is his real a.u.t.o.biography. (censor issue)

Agreed. This has to be a pretty rough time for the students/athletes. The program they chose to play for/attend, that touts its honor and integrity so freely, has pretty severely betrayed them. A man they've looked up to and admired, turned the other way when it counted most. I'm sure they are reeling from this.

I'm sure the games they play (NE, WI, OH), they will hear plenty of nasty taunting for something they had no knowledge or part of. While the people that should be facing that wrath are able to hide behind their lawyers.

Obviously though, what they are going through in NO WAY compares to the tragedies the young victims endured. I'm not trying to say that at all.

There's something to be said for justified collateral damage. Is it fair to the players? No. Might it be a justified move given the institutional failure to protect those who most need protection? Possibly.

Assuming JoPa was told what happened, which is EXACTLY what you are basing your opinion on and I consider that stance to be both ignorant and shameful.

But by all means, be comfortable with being ignorant if that works for you. But then, maybe JoPa was comfortable with being ignorant too, and might have something to do with why he didn't report the incident to the cops.

Maybe you just don't read the news, but JoePa admits he was told of something of a sexual nature between Sandusky and a 10-year-old boy. It doesn't matter what the act was, if it was sexual. It was his moral responsibility to call the cops.

I get that you get all tingly for sports icons, whatever. JoePa ADMITTED he knew it was sexual. I am not ignorant, I am appalled and sickened at what happened to DOZENS of children that could have been halted by Paterno. I find it revolting that you find him innocent with what he has admitted to knowing - and it is ridiculous to think he didn't know more.

It wasn't fair to the USC players when they got slapped by the NCAA for Pete Carroll and Reggie Bush's screw ups. But it needed to be done.

IF there is any sort of cover up, Penn State should get the death penalty. Reggie Bush took cash and cars, USC got a 2 year bowl ban and loss of scholarships. If Penn State is found to be covering up child rape, the punishment should be MUCH, MUCH worse.

Let the current players transer without having to sit out a year, just like USC players were allowed to do. Problem solved.

Wow some of the people in this thread are stupid as hell. JoePa admitted that the person who spoke to him was "visibly shaken" when telling him what happened. That alone should tell JoePa "hey, maybe I should call the cops." Instead he went to the AD (one of his other buddies) and they covered it up.

If he 'wished he could have done more' --resign today.

Where they love the governor

From this article linked off of the one quoted above (How PSU Administrators Could Escape Prosecution For Failing To Report An Allegation That Jerry Sandusky Raped A Boy):

In other words, Curley and Schultz, because they had no direct contact with the child, were not "mandated" reporters. They weren't required by law to do anything. The statute was broadened in 2007, according to the Legal Intelligencer, to include people who receive secondhand information.

Exactly. And I get telling your supervisor first - not what I would have done, but I can see it. But just looking the other way as it was covered up? Seeing that ******* Sandusky in the halls and not beating the **** out of him? How can he do that? He continued to see an active, sick predator of children every day, and just... Let it go.

JoePa was not the WORST in this, but he is still despicable.

Re: Paterno to retire at seasons end

He absolutely cannot and will not hit the field this weekend. It has to be over now. Everyone with any knowledge of these events has to go.

Trust me, he'll be on the field this Saturday. And the students will chant his name and carry him after the end of the game. Just watch.

I maybe would have told my supervisor, but if he didn't do anything I would have gone to the cops. Otherwise I would feel sick to my stomach everyday.
