Texas Tech & North Texas play home-home. So do Indiana & Evansville. Just a few examples.

I'm not sure. I think Royce is close to dominant force Fizer was. Babb and Allen are similar to what Horton and Nurse provided. The key is this team doesn't have a Tinsley, Heck we don't even have a Garrett.

I'm sorry but those statements just don't have enough backing yet and is a disservice to Fizer, Horton and Nurse. We've played 2 teams: Lehigh and Drake. Get back to us after we've been through the Big XII.

Some people on here are such conformist its ridiculous. We cant do anything unless some other big name school out there does it as well. Its something that makes Iowa unique, and its been a tradition for as long as I can remember. Our first road game each year is usually at UNI or Drake...a road game very close to home, and IMO, thats a good thing.

Tammy and Texa$ were a tradition as well, Nebraska, Missouri, and Colorado have left tradition behind for the betterment of themselves (they hope.) I think it's time we need to do the same. This is about wins and tourney bids, both of which we have been lacking in recent years. Why put ourselves at a disadvantage when there are better options than playing at Drake every other year? I definitely do not want to end the series but I like winning and giving ourselves the best opportunity to win.

Didn't realize all the scaredy cats we have in our fan base.

Guess what we are going to have to learn how to play on the road eventually, and it's not like we can just call up Izzo or Krzyzewski and ask for a home and home either.

We can't play at Duke. Their arena only holds 5k or 6k. It's not worthy of a BCS conference team like us.

That's why we made them come to the United Center. Duh.

All we need to do is play Drake in the Sprint Center.

I would kill to see Drake/ISU on a currently deployed aircraft carrier. We are talking somewhere in the middle of the Indian Ocean, with planes and cruise missiles taking off as the game is being played.

Despite our lackluster performance last night, there is still no reason that team should have lost to Drake last night. Our players were recruited to Iowa State because their talent was Big 12 level, not Missouri Valley. When you play in Hilton Coliseum in front of 12k to 14k fans, and the other arenas in the Big 12, it can be very difficult to transition down to play a game in a glorified high school gymnasium full of 4k to 5k fans. This letdown, along with Drake's extra motivation to beat the BCS conference team, plays extremely far into Drake's (and any other mid-major)'s favor. Mizzou does not play Missouri State; Kansas and Kansas State do not play Wichita State.... it's time for Iowa State to only play this game at home, at Wells Fargo, or else not at all. If this team hits its stride in Big 12 play, and develops a tournament resume, last night's game at Drake will be a thorn in our side, and possibly even a burst our bubble. It is time to quit catering to a private school who's success directly hampers our ability to compete and reach the next level. We might as well play a schedule North Carolina or Duke if we're going to lose at Drake, instead.

Another whiny little *****.....Done reading this crap half way through this post.

Ever heard of the Maui invitational? 7 legit teams play in a real D-2 gym for 4 straight days. Turned out pretty well for UCONN last season. And Top 10 ranked teams like Pitt should stop playing teams like Long Beach State at home.

Why??? ISU plays in a major basketball conference, which provides certain benefits. One of those benefits is that ISU doesn't have to give home/home series to mid-majors.

And you sound like somebody who is more concerned with pride than doing what is best for ISU. Is it better for ISU to play home games or road games? Is it better for ISU's fans to play in Hilton or Knapp? If ISU has the power to make the Drake game a home game every year, why shouldn't they do it?

Pride doesn't have much to do with it. Do you really think it's best for ISU to play nothing but home games and the occasional tournament in South Padre Island or Florida until January, when our first road game is against Kansas in Phog Allen? To me as a fan, playing a road game, even one against a puny, pathetic mid-major team like Drake (because as we all know BCS basketball teams are always automatically better than non-BCS teams), is a good test for a team, even if we are starved for wins these days. Would you really rather have another home game against a Chicago State than an in-state rival less than an hour away? I wouldn't.

And maybe this is where a bit of pride comes in; demanding that Drake only play us in Hilton reminds me a lot of the bratty, spoiled kid who takes his toys away from the other kids and runs home crying to mommie when he doesn't get his way. It looks like sour grapes to create a thread like this the day after a disappointing loss. If we're going to fear playing a mid-major team on the road that we are supposedly so much better than for fear of losing to them we might as well forfeit all of our conference road games.

One other thought; it might cost more to pay Drake to play at Hilton every year than it does to go down there every other year. I can't imagine it costs our athletic department that much money to send the team down on a bus to a place less than an hour away. I'm guessing that we do pay Drake and UNI to come and play at Hilton, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

As for calling it a road game at Drake, though, I think that's very questionable. Half of that crowd was made up of Cyclone fans. It's a stretch to call it a real road game.

Thank you. I could see cancelling a home and home series with a team like Western Kentucky or somebody like that, but it's 45 freakin' minutes away from Ames! If anything it's a neutral court.

We don't pay **** for a home and home. People have been talking about why we play Drake for years, including the days before this game was played. I don't care if it's next door, it's still a road game because they have the advantage of playing that court and those hoops their entire college career. Do you shoot better on your own rims you play on every game or on rims you play on once maybe twice in your life? How about some low-major road games? Why don't we just schedule a bunch of teams that might beat us like in football that has happened this year (thankfully we won the first three, barely.)

It would still be an in-state rival, just at home every year.

And maybe this is where a bit of pride comes in; demanding that Drake only play us in Hilton reminds me a lot of the bratty, spoiled kid who takes his toys away from the other kids and runs home crying to mommie when he doesn't get his way.

We are a high-major school and they are a mid-major school and we need to start acting like we are a high-major school if we want to have success.

Hence why I said play a low-major team on the road, why play an inspired in-state rival? People have been talking about not playing home and home with Drake for years, including former coaches, and there was discussion on this topic, on this board, for a few days leading up to this game.

In a home and home series with Drake or UNI, we do not pay them. We have a much larger venue to play in and they could end up making more money and we would also make more money.

I thought this part was pretty cut and dry, so I'll just copy and paste. Do you shoot better on your own rims you play on every game or on rims you play on once maybe twice in your life?
A detailed explanation from my response below:

Drake and UNI would never play Iowa or ISU if they quit playing at their place. The second Iowa or ISU trys and pulls that, the series will be over.

Not to mention that I'm pretty sure that the state legislature would likely have quite a bit to say about that idea. I beleive that Iowa is one of the few, maybe even only, state in the country where all the Division I basketball teams play each other. Unless things have changed culturally since I last lived there, I don't think Iowans have ever liked "big-timers". It would be a bruising PR battle for ISU or Iowa to try and pull that.

Well, if shooting on different rims is the reason why we shot 37% from the field Tuesday night and missed ten free throws than we should never, ever, ever play a non-conference road game or neutral court game again.
