You mean the Hawks lost to a low tier MAC team?

Yeah, too bad the thumping they put on the squawks doesn't count to get them out of that three way tie for last in the MAC.

It's kind of sad the way W. Michigan schedules "cupcakes" for the last game of the season.....:biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh:

I listened to the broadcast, and it did seem Dolph was a little off on some points.

However, he never said "this is WMU's bowl game."

What he did say was that it was like Western Michigan was playing a bowl game, and for a bowl game, and not Iowa (alluding to the fact that Iowa should have been the team playing for a bowl game).

You know the tired cliche - you say tomato, we say Dolphin believes this was WMU's Super Bowl...

Was anyone able to make sense of Dolph's game calling yesterday? Western Michigan would throw a pass, there would be a pause as Dolph's brain apparently wrestled with situation, then a nonchalant announcement that the pass was complete. Finally, he'd come out with the admission that it had been a 40 yard play and the ball was inside the 15 yard line. When things got really hairy, Dolph brought out the biggest big gun in the Hawkeye spin machine: This was Western Michigan's Bowl Game. Dolph is well and truly in the same league now with the legendary Zipper.

I had to drive to Chicago Saturday night and I decided to listen to the replay on WHO. I thought the same thing that this is the worst job of announcing that I've ever heard. Most of the time you couldn't tell what yard line the ball was on because Dolphin never said. Nonchalant announcing is a spot on assessment. The high school kids that do the Valley games are better. I thought Walters was shaky at times but this guy in just plain horrible.

As someone who has lived outside of the state of Iowa for over 10 years now, is this Dolph Pulliam (sp?) you're talking about? Is he the Hawkeyes announcer now? I remember watching his sportscasts for a good laugh. Every score had to have a unique verb even if it didn't match the score. "The Cubs crushed the Phillies 2 to 1. The Yankees clubbed the Twins, 4 to 3."

I vividly remember a "Packers stuffed the Teddy Bears" reference from Pulliam. Pretty funny stuff. Dolph was just like Ron Santo. Loveable but just plain unlistenable.

Having worked for ISU dining in the skyboxes at JTS for one full year, it seemed to me that Mr. Dolphin was the only announcer i have ever seen down in the boxes with the fans at HALFTIME. Its like he came down during commercial breaks or something to hang out with friends and shoot the stuff

The pause was probably because he had to mute the microphone, while Eddie had a tirade, and downed another drink.:realmad:

the clarity of the HD picture for the Big11Ten network for last nights Iowa game was FANTASTIC. the HD picture for ABC in the Cyclone game yesterday was miserable.

The ISU/Kansas game was not in HD, not that it would matter if you live in Central Iowa and don't have Mediacom. I can see the Alleman tower from my deck and I can't get a consistent signal.

I sent an email to Ray Cole to complain, but he has yet to reply

That is hilarious. I was thinking the same thing.

Moved out of Iowa in 1989. I used to see Dolph late on Friday or Saturday night at Jukebox Saturday Night on Court Avenue. If I remember correctly he played basketball for Drake. May have even been on a Final Four team.

Still laughing about this.:biglaugh:

Wasn't D***** a Drake bball player from way back?

Yes. He played on the famous 1969 final four team. They went up against ultra powerhouse, John Wooden coached, UCLA. Dolph was about six foot five and had to guard Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul Jabaar). Drake lost by one point.

This thread has taken a strange turn!

If you are old enough and lived in the Des Moines area, you will remember Dolph's Cartoon Corner on channel 8. Good show but not as good as "Floppy" or "The Magic Window with Betty Lou Varnum".

Funny. I live in south Des Moines and have no trouble getting an OTA HD signal.

It seems like ABC's HD for the first 2-3 games of Saturday are real horrible. They include sidebars and **** poor clarity. It is almost easier to watch on regular channel 5 and not ABC HD....anyone else agree?

Um, regular channel 5 == HD channel 5, and no, I thought the HD signal looked just fine considering it's unconverted content.
