?? maybe in 1985 that was the case, but there are probably 25+ media people who write about college bball every day, for major publications. all of these people know iowa state, know fred hoiberg, know the "transfer story" etc. everyone who is knowledgeable about hoops already knows about us, has written about us multiple times, and we won't be covered like a "who are they guys" story at all.
I understand your point. ISU has gotten a decent amount of coverage for a program that hasn't been to the tournament in more than a half-decade (and with few marquee wins this season).
On the other hand, if this matchup was happening in the BE —*unranked but surging team vs. Top-10 team for third place in the conference — they'd be all over it.
I'll still take under-the-radar for the time being. Win this game, and we may start to see a little more hype, and it'll be a more-deserved increase in attention.

Iowa State can shoot it, and Chris Allen and Scott Christopherson have shot the ball really well of late. The Cyclones have used the 3-point line and guarded it well but don't generate as many easy baskets as you need to win on the road. Still, home wins against Kansas, Kansas State and Texas will stand out to any committee member.

Iowa State takes advantage of the 3-point line, and Scott Christopherson is coming off of his best game, going for 28 points -- including five 3-point field goals -- against Kansas State. Iowa State is 21-8 and 11-5 in the Big 12. Good shooting and limiting second shots is a pretty good formula for Fred Hoiberg to get ISU back into the NCAA tournament. And the Cyclones are in.
Side note: Kansas State is still ahead of us....

They got there by taking on Baylor and Mizzou last week. That's who we've got this week. So it could look different next week.
I know KSU just beat two top ten teams on the road, but with having beaten them twice and having a much better Conf record, I just don't see why the pundits have them listed ahead of us.
I struggle with this too, but I just have to remind myself that these 'power' rankings, especially, are based on what have you done LATELY. Knowing that, I am okay with it. We'll have the chance to be on top next weekend playing 2 top 15 teams this week.

We won 7 of 9 including 3-0 against the state of Kansas in that stretch. Power rankings shower rankings.
Agree, and taken from my post in another thread:
We are playing a true round robin type schedule, beat said team head to head twice, and are 3 games ahead of them playing the exact same schedules, nobody can convince me we should not be higher than them in anytype of rankings.
KSU has had a better run the last few years. One of the reasons they get a little more respect.
We won't get it until we earn it an believe me, we are getting there! If Fred wins out and makes a good run in the Tourney, we'll get more respect.

That's the problem with a lot of posters here is that they get too caught up with wanting respect or "rankings". Respect and being ranked get you jack squat when it gets to game time in the Tourney.

Always liked that dream year when we went to the Elite 8. We didn't get much respect that year either until the tail end of the season.
It didn't matter to me! It was so much fun watching that year unfold and I believe we finished #2 in the country in the last poll which is all that mattered.
Respect gets you better seeds (which in turn gives you a better chance to win), gets you more open ears on the recruiting trail, and the positive hype that programs thrive on.
The program is healthier if it receives recognition for doing well.

Very true. But rep isn't just given overnight - it's earned over time. If next season goes a lot or even better than this season went then ISU is going to start becoming very visible.
And a key to building on the rep, it has to be more than just one or two high-impact seasons, followed by a couple seasons of dropoff, then a resurgence, then a backslide.
That's (mostly) what has happened @ISU for much of the past quarter-century. Definitely some big, thrilling seasons in there, but interspersed with duds. What is the Iowa State's longest streak of tournament appearances? Three?
96-97 was wonderful, then 2 losing seasons followed; 2000-02 was back-to-back brilliance — followed by a losing season.
And so on.
Problem is, if fans want respect or frequent rankings, that sort of inconsistency cuts both ways. When a team is unexpectedly powerful, notice comes late in the season. Then it builds credibility in a follow-up season, team gets a good amount of attention, but loses a lot. Cycle repeats.
