This is how I took it as well. It is a mutual respect thing. We don't allow that stuff to happen here and evidently Paul cracked down on something similar today on his site, which I appreciate.

As much as folks would like there to be, there isn't any hostility between Paul and me. There is more than enough room for two quality Iowa State sites on the Internet.

There is a major need of a CU Buff fan site. Wanna help?

You're right. He's just trying to justify his brand's existence. And at the speed at which information moves now he's realizing his product is becoming extinct.

I doubt that. Rivals dominates recruiting info and is also part of yahoo. That isn't going to change anytime soon.

Why do people pay for inside info? Just wait 20 min and it will be all over.

I think Chris was referring to CF and cyclones.com as the two Iowa State sites that there is room for. (just being facetious)

The pay for information model is dying/dead. Viral information rules and Paul needs to adapt or fail. I don't blame him for trying to hang on however, he's just trying to make a living.

See my previous post. People pay for the recruiting information. Last I checked there is a helluva lot more recruiting news and detail on rivals than on here.

IMO, the only reason to be a paying member of CR would be to eliminate the trolls and "In-State Rivals" type posters who only want to flame and post like an idiot.

Yes....but you would not be able to bask in the golden glow of Jambalaya and his crusade against UofI.

CR and Rivals in general have their purpose. There are a lot of Rivals reports, stories, and analysis that you can't get unless you are a paid member.

Their message board, however, is not a competitor with CF. Not even close. They may get a few recruiting details leaked a bit sooner than here, but not much. I think they talk a bit more about recruiting because of the pay stories from the site, but that's about the only advantage. CF is just a better and much more fleshed out message board.

Oh, and since CW started running things full time and we started getting exclusive CF reporting, the site ratcheted up even higher. So props to C-Willy and staff.

a pay site for public info is a bad business model,........ nearly all info is becoming public in minutes, even seconds, these days ------ adapt or die. On recruiting....... why do you need someone to call recruits to see their position on a school, their star #s or even their hi-lite tape when they let the world know themselves via twitter, you tube, etc., etc??

Just when we thought you couldn't possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this…and totally redeem yourself!

Paul Clark@cyclonereport
@ChrisMWilliams Just wanted you to know what was going on. And I needed to rant like an idiot on twitter. It cleanses; good for the soul.

Problem is, if he's not getting paid then he's just a creepy dude who monitors the words and actions of a bunch of 17 year old boys.

All the good mods are here.

(that gets me some leeway on my next questionable post, doesn't it?)

you'd think so, but no. We're far too drunk on our own power to fall victim to flattery.

I have a buddy who has a CR subscription for recruiting purposes/to escape Hawk fans/read the nuggets of info about stuff like coaching searches/realignment and he says the level of "crazy" out of our fans over there is pretty high. There are all kinds of rivalries and childish crap between posters, as well as a bunch of guys who think their crazy opinions are more valid because they pay to post them.

I guess, the point is that A) when you eliminate one evil on the internet, another is created and B) there are trolls everywhere.

What info (in general terms) is there at pay sites that we can't get here? Or is it just getting the info a bit sooner than announced.

The entire Rivals recruiting database, which consists of player profiles and a ton of stories. If you follow recruiting that is pretty nice to have access to. If you don't, probably not worth it.

Some of the rivalries/crazy chatter carried over CR to here from time to time.

I was a member of the CR community for years. I started in 2002, when Deace launched Cyclone Nation - which sucked but turned me on to message boards. Then I stumbled into CR and eventually subscribed.

It was great for awhile; as others have said being behind a paywall helped eliminate trolls and it was a good community. But especially as CF began to take off, it seemed like the CR paid community just got more insular and more like an echo chamber. If you didn't drink the kool-aid, so to speak, your intelligence and dedication were suddenly under suspicion. To be sure, many (if not most) people were not like that. But the jihadists were starting to overshadow the more rational people and dominate the conversation.

And although I like Paul Clark, I thought he could be a bit of a curmudgeon too. He insists his is the best Cyclone site on the internet and as CF grew, I no longer believed that to be true.

So those things, coupled with the fact that I have young kids and thus no time to follow the microhappenings of recruiting anymore, it was an easy decision to let my CR subscription lapse.
