@jgkfan (Justin Gaard of KFAN):
Ran into Fred Hoiberg at the airport. Hes doing work this weekend for @CBSSportsNet and is worried he won't look as good as @WSzczerbiak

Anybody know what this is about? Fred doing stuff for CBS this weekend?

...KFAN is sports radio out of The Twin Cities.

They've had coaches on the pre, post and half time shows all tournament. Frank Martin and Shaka Smart did it last weekend for the Sweet 16/Elite 8.

That'd be some good pub if he could get in and take over for martin or shaka on some of the commentary work.

I listen to KFAN quite a bit, and Justin Gaard is covering the final 4 in New Orleans (as you probably assumed). Another little tidbit though, he attended Iowa for a couple years if I remember right. :eek:

The tweet mentions Wally S and CBS Sports Net. Likely Fred is on CBSN, not CBS. CBSN will have extensive coverage of the Final Four this weekend, too. Wally S has been on the CBSN set all season long.

This is just an observation of Fred...but has anyone else noticed he tells the same story all the time? It's always, "I grew up five blocks from Hilton as a kid and walked to games, etc" and usually says, "Hilton was rockin." "I'm proud of our guys" Just an observation...

He very much does. I really do think that many of us could pretty much write a fake interview with him and nobody would know the difference. I don't mind it, since he's often telling it to a new audience. I don't tend to listen to as many interviews now, since they are so predictable, but that's fine.

He has the routine down pat. People love it, so why change it (yet)?

I think he is told to say that stuff. Every game, the announcers have to say the same thing. And they always have to show the map of where the transfers came from. It's annoying and will probably be the same thing next season. But if they didn't do that, in a couple years, no one would know the stories. I like the hometown love, makes the program very approachable. Small town feel.

Oh, for sure...I'm with you....it is a great story and the media LOVES that stuff...and it's probably easier for him as a busy dude to just kinda share the same things. I will say, the times I've seen Fred off the record (speaking engagements, etc) he's VERY funny. I was at a lunch one time and most of the audience was much older...and he was talking about how excited Nang was via twitter and he said, "you guys probably all are big twitter people." Another VERY funny comment was they were having a raffle of random ISU things.....tickets, posters, and they had a Tasheed Carr shooting shirt (game worn) and after everything was given away he opened his speech with, "Man, had I known I could have won a Tasheed Carr shooting shirt, I would have bought a raffle ticket." :rolleyes:
