Prepare for giant rant and wall of text:
We as agriculturalists need to realize that there is a war on agriculture going on in this country as has been for some time. Its not going away and at this pace we will lose. Not today and not this year but we will lose unless something is done.
Weve lost the last few generations and if we dont step up our education process we will lose the next few as well. My 6 year old niece doesnt eat meat because its unhealthy and her teachers tell her so. WTF. Its similiar to african americans not eating pork. Their culture somewhere along the line decided that its unclean and not healthy. They passed that down to their children and so on. Now you will be hard pressed to find any of them willing to eat pork.
I think that we live under a false assumption that its just the lunatic fringe like peta and vegetarians that are misinformed about our work and our product. Its not, its like 80% of the population.
At RAGBRAI I grilled for thousands of riders from all over the country and gave out free samples of beef. People would ask the usual stupid questions but the alarming thing was that people would ask "whats your meet injected with" "does it have steroids in it" I wanted to ram my spatula down their throats.
I think the majority of us just think well people have to eat so we will always have jobs, I think were starting to see that this isnt the case. People are completely changing their views on food and their reasoning is based on lies and misinformation.
Our local state and county beef producers and pork producers ect associations in my opinion do a **** poor job of actually educating anyone. The majority of their events are in small towns that already understand their message. The gov. imo needs to make it mandatory that people take some sort of class in school that talks about modern day production agriculture and our food supply.
My other idea that is completely impossible but something fun to think of is all farmers get together and decide that we are only selling our livestock/ grain ect to companies that will export it. For one year the US is without our produce. See how important people think agriculture is after that, few people starve to death is worth it imo.
I like to engage shoppers at the local Hy-Vee ............. long story short, had a woman tell me " who needs farmers, I can get all the food I need right here in this store" .............WTF. Its definiteley safe, so no worries on that front. Appetizing? Not so much. But that's industrial food processing, there are lots of disgusting things that go into the processing of all types of food. Personally I prefer to buy higher grade beef or get it from the farmers market or butcher if possible, not because of safety, just because I'd rather eat a fresher hunk of meat with less chemicals applied.
I suspect USDA if not FDA's CFSAN are getting alot of pressure to release some kind of statement!! Should have been out already.There are about 3,000 families that a pretty ****ing worried right now. I sure wish some news outlet would express it's safety with the same vigor as ABCs hit piece...
