This is where things go pear-shaped.

I have a personal stake in the prosperity of BPI as I'm living in the Siouxer and they employ a **** ton of people here. You reference this test for e-coli which BPI does perform except here's this whistle-blower dude claiming they're lying. Also, the guy says BPI is putting "Mr. Clean" in their product.

It's easy to say this guy is full of ****. But if he is why has BPI been dropped by;

McDonald's
Burger King
Taco Bell
Kroger's
Super Valu
Safeway
Hy-Vee
etc. etc.

If it's this obvious to CFers what's wrong with these companies? Why am I not seeing campaign style adds from BPI stating their case?

Its all about the benjamins baby. And by that I mean profits. If you owned one of the above companies that you listed and said company was on a list that is proven to use the product that people are all up in arms about the easiest and quickest way to insure that you dont lose a crap load of $$ is to say that you are no longer serving food that contains the product.

Companies like the ones you listed are not going to buck the trend and fight to say that the product is safe, they cant afford it. Its just easier to say "we no longer use this product".

Maybe they know something that we dont (I doubt it) I just think in order to maintain profits they took the easy route (dont blame them) instead of trying to fight the public outrage and risk almost certian financial impacts

Not using BPIs product will cost these companies ( or their customers ) millions, perhaps hundreds of millions of dollars will it not? There's a reason they started using it twenty years ago and I'm guessing it had a lot to do with the Benjamins, baby.

I agree, not using a "filler" product would potentially cost millions. However with the negative publicity surrounding this product these losses would (my assumption I have no facts) be dwarfed by a loss of business.

Think about it if McDonalds continued to serve beef with the product it would be nationally/internationally known. If just 5% of the people who frequent their stores stop going because they dont want to eat this product then what does that do to business in the long run?

I get your point but I guess my thoughts are that the negative publicity for continued use outweighs the potential increase in cost of using a different product (the funny thing is that they would almost certianly be using SOMETHING similar or a product with "filler" just not this one and could market as such)

I'm with you but it's my sense (not really knowing any better) that these businesses would really like to be able to go back to using the filler. I guess I don't see BPI giving them a reason to...

I've been in over 100 slaughter/processing plants through the course of my career. BPI's are the cleanest, most technologically up-to-date, and most well maintained of the bunch. And it's not even close. They also have the highest ratio of QC personnel to production employees and do the most finished product testing in the business. Also, referring to their product as "filler" is a misnomer. It's not filler.

Oh I agree 100%, if the filler makes their input cost lower which it does they are silly not too unless they think they can market a "filler free" product and charge more and still sell burgers.

I agree that BPI isnt really to my knowledge doing much more than damage control, I dont know this so just my perception.

The reason that this even an issue is that packing plants have done this is they have no competition and people.let them. I have fed cattle, and will only buy from local lockers. You can tell by the smell.
