Lucious vs Gesell

I just watched Woodbury play an all star game in New Orleans during the final 4, and he looked surprisingly good. Everyone on the court was way more athletic than him, but he used some crafty moves to get to the hoop and did a nice job rebounding. Now, of course, they don't seem to play any defense or fundamental basketball of any kind in these types of games, so maybe it meant nothing. But, I wouldn't say he sucks, just because Iowa got him. I think he is going to be a "nice" player.

I agree here, To me I don't care what most people think, Gesell and Woodburry will never be that good, they are looked at as good because of their numbers but we need to realize they play in South Sioux, which is NE basketball and NE basketball has never been (and never will be good) so ye he can average 25 points against a state of nobodies. I mean they don't even play in the Top or Highest level of ball in NE. So I completely agree here on the LOL on both of these guys ever being "Studs" they will be like the rest of the "Talent" form Sioux City.. nothing but scrub bench players. .

Not sure it was a talent issue but more an issue of MP being a super stud and Gessell being more of a true 2 guard. Most of what I have heard is that he has traditionally played the off-guard and has struggled with the point guard role so far. But I heard that a while back and he has probably gotten much better in the role similar to the way Horner went from 25 ppg in high school to a true point in college at Iowa.

According to the article the OP posted, Gessell will be playing PG next year at Iowa. He admits that he has some learning to do, but feels PG is a better fit for him and apparently so does Fran. IDK if that is true or Fran is just finding a way to get him on the court.

My whole point is that comparing Gessell to Lucious is really unfair because he lacks experience as a PG. Playing PG in Nebraska high school ranks vs. B1G and NCAA tournament experience. People on here are evaluating him based on potential and that is irrelavant for the most part because he will only have one chance to face Lucious (unless the teams were to meet in some post-season tourney). If you ask me who I want on my team next year, I will take Lucious.

Yes, the NBA Camp that Woodbury won MVP of was filled with Souix City and Nebraska players.

This is some great reasoning. Gessel isn't good because he played with another very good player, while Luscious is good because he played on a team full of very good players.
Huh? Lucious was good enough to play the PG spot on his final four teams, which I would gather could have beaten Gessel's AAu squad by about 80 points. Gessel was not good enough to play the spot he is intended to fill in college on his AAU team because Paige was better. The question is do you think Paige is better than all those players that MSU has on those teams? I don't think so. Lucious is a much safer bet to have a big impact next season. Gessel will not be a world beater by any means right away.

You make some serious logical errors in this post. While I agree with your end result the path that got you there is a bit "off".

Agreed, he will be PG at Iowa, but until last year, i believe, he had not played PG for South Sewer. I think some of it is a size issue, I have heard he is not 6'2", is closer to 6 foot. You're right, big transition coming up for the kid but I'm sure he will work hard and be an effective player for Iowa for probably 2-3 years.

I will say he can score in bunches in the high school ranks, though. My wife played ball at Wayne State in NE (about 45 minutes west of Sewer City) and he used to be their ball boy when he was something 8-10 yrs old and would drop bombs during halftime of the games. He impressed a lot of people at those games:smile:.

Probably because they are in Nebraska and were like "what is this game with the round bouncy ball?" lol

I think Gessell will develop into a nice player, but given a position change and the transition to D1 basketball next year, he will have more growing pains then I think some Squawk fans realize.

I hope it isn't the same people on here saying that Gesell will struggle ragging on hawk fans for thinking he is going to be good that have also been on the site saying that Naz Long is going to come and and tear it up. Just because he didn't play the PG position because of Paige does not mean he can't do it. Paige is considered by some to be the top true PG in his class. And yes he will be better than Lucious, maybe even next year. Lucious was an average player at MSU.

U obviously don't read HN. 80% of them think gessell will avg at least 8ppg and 4.5apg. some even have him over 5 a game which is asinine. Then about 70% think woodbury will avg at least 8ppg 6rpg and 1.5bpg. And that's AT LEAST. idk they are just expecting way to much from true freshman. there in for a major letdown.

And our class is WAY below there's?? I'm pretty sure there's is in the 20's and ours is in the 30's. We both have 2 top 125 players, iowas are ranked just slightly higher.

If one class is in the 20s and one class is in the the 30s, and the 30s team has Will Clyburn, Kory Luscious and Trent Lockett eligible as transfers, that's a pretty easy slam dunk as to who is bringing in more talent.

Not to mention that Long isn't included in our class ranking yet.

Seems painfully simple. Their top freshman is ranked slightly above ISU's top freshman. Their second ranked freshmen is ranked slightly above ISU's second ranked freshman.

Will Clyburn will outproduce any of these next year and is by far the most proven talent. Ditto for Lockett if he comes would likely produce the second most of any freshman/newcomer, Luscious is kind of a "who knows" but could easily outproduce even talented true freshman.

I doubt Long will change our ranking much, if any. I don't think many American scouts have seen him play any time recently.

Lazy Americans!!
