I really don't think it's a bad choice either. He is kind of a lump as a personality but I think he is a pretty good administrator.

As for any bias against ISU, please. The man strikes me as being very professional.

This. The man is a professional. He's going to be paid very well to administer one of the premier athletic conferences in the country. Anyone who thinks he's going to harbor some petty grudge against Iowa State just because he used to be the AD at a rival school, and is somehow going to act on it to our detriment is a fool.

He made a pretty brilliant hire in Ferentz, that was universally reviled at the time it happened.

He brought Harbaugh to Stanford and helped orchestrate PAC expansion.

This is a pretty good track record, IMO.

To the people worried about his Hawkeye connections and how he is going to bag on the Cyclones: Surely you can't be serious... I'm sure the first freaking thing on his mind is how much he hates ISU and wants to shut down the University or put ISU athletics in the MAC.

If anything this is really good for ISU. This guy is an Iowa native.

I don't think you understand, the guy is going to SCREW us over. We may not even be allowed to play in division 1 athletics when he gets done with us.

I think it's silly to believe he's going to have it out for us because he was at the U of I. He's a career administrator - not your mechanic.

I'm pumped because a very qualified AD at one of the best athletic departments in the country thinks the Big 12 commish job is a step up. That signals to me that we are headed in the right direction.

If you're worried about his connection with Iowa, just look at Dan McCarney

**** that. If you're worried about his connection with Iowa, look at getting your head examined.

In the other thread, I posted a "report card" on his performance at Stanford that a local reporter gave him last year after his contract was extended. It was ok, but nothing outstanding.

It's just one man's opinion, but the AD management grade is interesting, since that is primarily what he'll be doing for the Big 12 as the conference manager.

Anybody check the Stanford boards? What are they saying?

Seems an underwhelming choice to me, but for the sake of the Big 12, hopefully I'll be proven wrong.

Here’s how I’d grade him on handling of various topics:

Football: A+
(Football infrastructure changes: A+++)
Men’s basketball: D
Athletic dept. management: C
Fundraising: C-
Pac-10 involvement/leadership: A
Overall: B (Because football is so important.)
Deserving of contract extension? Yes.

Wasn't he also chair of the NCAA selection committee for some time? You don't get that job with out the respect of your peers. This is a solid hire IMO.

Ya, I'm ******! Now he's going to kick us out of the Big XII and we're going to be stuck in the MAC. Ugh.

(Do I really need jimlad here?)

Yeah, I forgot mine too, but I think I should have put one on anyway. You know how crazy people get.

I think you actually agree with what I said. My comments related to Mac shows that although Mac was a Hawkeye, when he became a HC here, he did his job extremely well wrt the games against the Hawks as he's a professional. I am sure that Bowlsby will do a great job as a professional.

I seriously don't understand all the excitement for Bowlbsy. Seems like Beebe 2.0 to me. Hope I'm wrong.

I had bigger apprehension when McCarney (Hawkeye captain and die hard Hayden worshiper) was hired as our FB coach than I do about a former Hickeye AD as our Comish.

He's just moving up the ladder and the U of I happened to be one of the rungs. Seems like he has done a good job everywhere he has been.
