Eh, I've been going to the fair on East Side night for 15 years and have yet to really see anything that's anymore "dangerous" than on any other night at the fair.

Eh, I've been going to the fair on East Side night for 15 years and have yet to really see anything that's anymore "dangerous" than on any other night at the fair.
I confess I'm intrigued by the farm animals. It's my favorite part of the fair (other than the craft beer tent). I grew up in a city, though, so I didn't experience life on the farm.
By the way, which night is "Beat Whitey Night" at the fair this year?

I confess, we love the fair. Growing up we would go about every year. When I was in HS I lived at the Youth Inn for a week a couple years and worked in one of the buildings. When we were first married we lived in MN so went to the MN State Fair every year. It has the edge over the IA State Fair in the food department--a few more unique food places there that we liked. Although their turkey legs look like chicken legs compared to what you get in IA. Once we moved back to IA, we have gone every year. We only go one day, but are there a good 10 hrs. With young kids. Yes, the money disappears quickly but we only buy food.

Never had to post in these yet but this week I did something I need to confess. It's not state fair related and didn't want to make a second confession thread. This week I made a post on CF that was in very poor taste. I made it when I was in a inebriated state. It's still no excuse for what I said. I'm sorry to all those who saw it and will try never to do anything like it in the future.

All I need anymore is 1 day at the fair and I've seen all I want to see. Growing up I used to show cattle and would spend an entire week on the fairgrounds since We had to have the cattle there Monday morning for the 4-H show and our open class show was Friday so they wouldn't release us until the last Sunday since they wanted livestock in the barns for the last weekend. I too also stayed in the Youth Inn since it beat driving an hour 1 way back and forth from home so in the evenings I'd get my fill of fair food and entertainment and after a few days had seen every corner of the fairgrounds so the 2nd half of the week got pretty dull unless there was something good going on at a free stage. I know what I want to see and what I don't care to see so I can fit it all into 1 day now and be done with the fair.
I will tell you 1 thing about the Youth Inn, that place had some uncomfortable bunk beds and if you didn't lock your stuff up it was going to be stolen. I took an afternoon nap and had money stolen out of my wallet which was in my pants under my bed. Ever since then I would put anything of value in my pillow case and sleep on it. Would also bring something I could string around the fan, alarmclock, and dufflebag and lock it to the bunk so it wouldn't get stolen. Overall though it was only like $5 a night or something back then to stay there which was much cheaper than getting a hotel plus you didn't have to pay for admission everyday since you were already on the fairgrounds.

If this is true, I salute you! They had to stop it for a few years but we got it back up for my senior year and it's gone strong since then. Huge fundraiser and (mostly) good interaction with the public.

Spent two nights in the Youth Inn already this year. It's a ghost town nowadays. I bet there weren't 40 people last night. It was cool, quiet & comfortable.
I've been to the fair less than a handful of times...I've always been mildly interested in it...but don't get the connection to it that some have. (And I've been an Iowa boy my entire life...)
But seeing as how I have a thing for Iowa farm girls, I suspect the fair is in my future, but I'll go along happily.

just did the stockmens large beer vs small beer comparison. I am on my cell phone so I can't post my picture findings but I poured a large beer into a small cup (each beer filled to the brim) and all that was left of the large beer was less than 1 swallow...that 1 swallow is $1.00 and not worth it.
