just did the stockmens large beer vs small beer comparison. I am on my cell phone so I can't post my picture findings but I poured a large beer into a small cup (each beer filled to the brim) and all that was left of the large beer was less than 1 swallow...that 1 swallow is $1.00 and not worth it.
Good investigative report, news you can use. We need more of this on CF.

The Winterset Metroplex
1. Gizmo sandwiches at the booth between KGGO and the Bill Riley stage. Truly the best food at the fair.
2. Roasted ear corn at the stand West of the big slide (right on the North side of the sidewalk).
3. Checking out all the restored tractors on the SW side of the grounds. I work at a Deere dealership & grew up on a farm, so it's cool to see all that old iron restored.
4. Every year since he was born, we take our boy to the DNR building West of the Grandstands to watch the ducks. We've been doing it for 4 years (this year will be #5), and he still enjoys it.

I'm lukewarm on State Fair musical acts. My highlight was seeing George Thorogood in 1985 (Johnny Freakin' Winter opened up for him) on the "Maverick" tour. Other than that, I've seen Def Leppard a few times (my wife's idea) and it seems like I saw Hank Jr. once (I'm not sure, since I used to get drunk at the fair quite a bit). I also saw Joan Jett play one of the free stages a few years ago, and she killed it.

I've got nieces & nephews who show at the fair, so even if I don't want to go I'll go.

The State Fair=Lame. Oh and ******* expensive.

Probably less expensive per person than places like Henry Doorly Zoo, Adventureland, and (insert concert venue, sports arena/stadium here). Any place where they have a captive audience seeking food and beverage, you know the prices will be sky high.

We dropped almost $70 at the zoo yesterday just on admission and lunch for our family of 6 (and 3 of the kids got in free). We priced a trip to Adventureland, and it would have been well over $100 just to walk through the gates. All in all, the fair is probably less expensive than many family outings these days, and just as fun for people of all ages.

Another 5-10 mph and you'll be in the neighborhood of R.A. Dickey's knuckleball.

Is the Youth Inn where they housed the FFA Grandstand attendants? If it is, I've stayed there...yes, I was a Grandstand Attendant for a couple years in high school. Went to the fair every year as a kid and through high school. Haven't been back since 2006. Mostly because I got a job in college where I worked 12 to 15 hour days during fair time, and now because I've moved out of state.

I don't miss it that much. If I'm ever back in Iowa during the fair I'll probably go (esp. if I'm hanging out w/ my dad -- he loves it) but I'm not going to make a special trip back just for the fair. Guess I got burned out on it.

I was back in IA for a wedding over the weekend and took the family to the fair on Sunday. I haven't been in at least 10 years, but there was one noticeable difference versus ANY fair in the past. The number of people sporting ISU gear far exceeded Hawkeye people. It was stunning!

I'm guessing you never made it to the midway...

My family noticed this too... So much more red and gold than black and gold
