If you have a 9 year old, I'd suggest you stay at a place in Des Moines Wednesday and Thursday night at a place with an indoor waterpark.

It's great that WVU fans are making the trek out to see their new opponents. I'd love to get to Morgantown next fall.

Olde Main's food works as a decent beer sponge. I've never had a bad meal there, but there isn't anything foodwise I would rave about. The burgers are solid, and the atmosphere in the pub side is one of my favorite spots to unwind, have a few beers and get some chow in my gullet.

I get around
Yea, looks like the new gameday plan for the band has them practicing and warming up at the indoor facility then doing some pre-game entertainment at the spirit walk and at the alumni center. That really seems like a solid move. Warm-up stuff at Hilton was a fun tradition for the band, but it seemed like nobody outside their parents ever knew there was anything to see out there. Any sort of event you can add to gameday is a good thing.

Right you are. Here's a pic of the way the band warmed up previously on the west side of Hilton.:

Haven't read through the entire forum but here is what I know:

1. There should be a Cy-ride close to your hotel that you can get on for free.

However, if I were you, I would think seriously about picking up some beverages and paying the $20 to park near the stadium. Maybe buy some chips too but most (there will be a few that don't fit in this category), about 95% of ISU fans will invite you to their tailgate and let you eat food, have some kool-aid shots (be careful, they tend to force you to think that ISU will win), and play their games. I'm guessing there will be lots of warm chili, warm drinks, should be a great day. Tailgating at ISU games is top notch.

2. Thanksgiving dinner. Not certain but I think Olde Main Brewery and the Gateway do something. I have had the Hy-Vee Thanksgiving meal and it is good. You could eat Hy-Vee and bring the leftovers for tailgating.

3. Glad you are making the trip. Hope you have a good time.

You should also check with your hotel on Thanksgiving food, as I highly suspect they will have something nice there too. I have never stayed there, but my son did on a PhD recruiting visit, and had a beautiful room. There is a Cy-Ride stop right across the street, but I don't think you'll have any trouble driving and parking at the game either.

HyVee caters Thanksgiving meals ... you could arrange for it arrive at the hotel... eat in your room.. or see if they have a small banquet room to rent/borrow.

If I were choosing what to do and hadn't been in Ames before, here's what I would do assuming you're staying at Hilton Garden Inn in West Ames:

Wed night: Perfect Games is right next door. They have bowling, arcade games and a sports bar. Plenty to do for the family.

Thursday: I would probably hit up Olde Main...that is UNLESS The Cafe is open on Thanksgiving. Search Google for The Cafe and if it's open, don't miss it. After lunch, I would walk through campus. The students will be gone, so you should be able to park in any lot you want and walk around.

Thursday night: watch some football at either Wallaby's or BWW.

Friday: Do Hickory Park for lunch. It's going to be late by the time the game is over, so I don't know that you'll want to go there at 9:30 or even if they'll be open.

Friday afternoon: If you like to tailgate, grab some beer at HyVee or Cyclone Liquor on S. 4th and head to the stadium. It's going to cost you $20 to park, but it's nice to have a home base vs being a nomad. If you really don't want to tailgate that much and want to show up right before game time, I would suggest either the KMart lot shuttle or parking at the HyVee and walking (probably a mile).

Friday night: After the game, find a place that will deliver pizza to your room (Pizza Pit or Jeff's Pizza) OR, go to West Towne Pub right down from your hotel.

I personally don't get the people saying "go to Des Moines". There's plenty to do in Ames, even over a holiday weekend.

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet, but The Machine Restaurant in Des Moines would be a great option for a thanksgiving meal. The food there is about as homemade as it gets, and I am pretty sure they serve on Thanksgivings.

I would do that for the Thanksgiving noon meal for sure.

Order in pizza from Jeff's or Pizza Pit.

Hit up Perfect Games with the family.

FYI I don't think that's where the band will be warming up anymore. I think they'll be based more around the Alumni Center.

Bummer, I hope it isn't true.

We've been enjoying the band as part of our tailgate for a few years.
