Where is the Offensive Creativity?

How about a trick play, mix it up a little. Maybe some QB under center.

Herman had a knack for knowing just when to run a trick play, or change things up.

So far Messingham hasn't showed that at all. Looks to be as conservative as EIU out there.

Instead of creativity, how about some execution of basic plays? I'd like that, please.

No, Jantz up the middle again! That play was really doing it. Also, the 2 yard average per pass play was really showing how much we can light it up.

My personal favorite is where jants just lays the ball on the ground. No fuss, no mess, just a clean turnover. Nice and easy!

It's hard to run many trick plays when:

1) You can barely get 2 1st downs in a row to sustain a drive.
2) The D is getting ridiculous penetration.

Seems like if you can stop the zone read, nothing else works. I liked when we went two backs. I'd like to see more standard running plays, and passing off of that.

Maybe we should hire Ken O'Keefe?

Throwing in a random flea-flicker, wildcat, reverse, etc. is NOT creative. Anybody can do it. To be really creative, you need to mess with your blocking schemes, routes, etc. Hardly anybody on this board, including me, will know if we're really being creative or not.

My idea with Tiller and Jantz in the backfield in a shotgun isn't so stupid now is it? At least it would make the defense second guess what we are doing. Which one do we snap to, do they throw or run????

It's not stupid if you think our coaching staff has the ability to design it so it works and install it in practice, all the while taking time away from the other offensive plays we obviously struggle at executing.

Two plays that I liked:
1) QB under center - we ran a sneak off it but was glad to see it
2) A pass off a read option really gave SJ time to throw the ball

I wish they would do more of both of the above.

Yes more trick plays!

When your regular offense isn't working, pull out some trick plays! Nothing but trick plays next week. That sounds like a recipe for some W's!

You mean handing off to Shontrelle on 2nd and 9 every single time isn't creative???

I exaggerate, I know, but damn...it sure seemed like Mess was afraid to call pass plays tonight. And after seeing Jantz's performance, I'm not sure I disagree.

We struggle at them because the defense knows it's coming.....here's an idea, mix in something new!@>???

Steele had as many sacks as completions for a good chunk of the game. I was one of the few that wasn't too happy about getting rid of Herman (I think Rhoads needs an independent OC he clashes with sometimes), but it's hard to be an OC when you have to be concerned with the blocking problems we were having. We tried some of our bread and butter early and it just didn't work and left Mess with a mess.

I know this should have had a pirate, but I would be good against ISU in NCAA because i know what is coming. Not hard to call a defense when you know whats coming.

I'm not saying we should implement any trick plays. I don't like gimmicks. But we have to stop living and dying by the zone read. At least the way we run it, We need to do more play action off of it if we are going run it as much as we do. And Jantz has to learn how to actually give it to the running backs.

Ive only got a chance to watch tonight's game and the tulsa game. because i live i CA and dont get all the ISU coverage out here but i saw in the tulsa game Messingham was on the sideline and i dont think i saw him there tonight. That may or may not be a factor. On a side note why dont we try a WR reverse pass with tiller throwing it.
