The reality is this.........

ISU is not going to win very many games in the Big 12 when Clyburn scores 0 points, Melvin has only 4 rebounds, KL continues his practice of a 1 to 1 (or worse) assist/turnover ratio, and Booker continues with his best impression of Railey.

There is no interior defense on this team....without fouling. From tonight, it appears this team, despite the experience at guard, cannot handle a simple press. When they get behind, the only offensive plan they seem to have is to jack up some 3's early in the shot clock and hope they go in.

I hate to say this, but I also was not impressed with CFH tonight. No way in hell would I have had Percy and Niang on the bench to start the 2nd half. Reward them for the effort and enthusiasm they were showing in the first half. They actually appeared like they wanted to win. Why the hell put Clyburn and Booker back out there to start the 2nd half? What had they done?

Not impressed, and if this continues.....it is going to be a miserable Big 12 season. Finishing 8th or 9th as the coaches predicted will probably be about right.

Something else to consider.......what does Iowa lose from tongiht for their team next year? 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists.
Yep, tryouts start Tuesday. We want the hustlers on the court. The mistake prone people need to clean it up.

I don't have much to say because I have watched ISU once this year. Just want to add a comment from our side about Niang. He's the real deal. When he announced, I had no idea who he even was. Then I had heard how he was doing good out east, and started to think he could be a good player. Today, I was bummed Iowa lost out on him. I think he is going to be very good. You could see a few times where he looked like a freshman, but he definitely held his own.

I still think the sky is the limit for this team. It's just a matter of playing good, fundamental basketball, and maybe making a few line up and strategical changes.

Not worried. This is the first game this year where I think we came up against a truly inspired opponent. Iowa simply wanted this game more. The Cyclones matched their intensity at points in the game but I think Iowa out hustled ISU the overwhelming majority of the night. I'm not going to throw Will under the bus like some on here though. I honestly think he was shocked at the intensity of this game and couldn't find a way to get into it. He'll be fine going forward and if anything this will be a good teachable moment for CFH in getting him ready for Big 12 play.

I think the ridiculously frustrating theme of the night though again is turnovers. What's really insanely annoying is how many unforced turnovers we have.

The whole problem here was defense, and the worst problem we have right now is Booker. If Booker starts playing decent defense and staying out of foul trouble, we can have a decent team. I said basically the same thing at the first of the year. I think Gibson is serviceable but has a long way to improve. Niang needs to lift some weights in order to be a strong defensive presence inside. Our inside defense killed us tonight. Also they out-rebounded us. We are in big trouble if we can't play any better defense than we played. Big teams that have an inside game will kill us.

Behind you
Gesell, Woodbury, Clemmons as freshmen. White, Oglesby, Olesani as sophs. Marble, Basabe, McCabe as juniors. Like it or not, this is going to be a strong team in the next few years.

I wasn't impressed with Iowa's players individually from inside the arena, but they play well together.

State was rattled at the start and battled back effectively to end the half. I was surprised Fred returned to the same lineup that got us in the hole to start the game to begin the second half, and Iowa rattled off another run to put us at arm's length. We were awful defensively from start to finish, I thought, not getting back after made baskets, not contending for boards, losing guys on screens. The turnover bug it seems will be biting us again and again this year. This group just doesn't value possession, and it will cost you in tight games like last night.

ISU's achilles heel may be that we have no dependable scorer inside this year. When the going gets tough on the road and their crowd is into the game, you need somebody who can get to the basket and finish and draw fouls (and make free throws!) Georges is going to be that guy soon, but Melvin was nowhere to be found tonight.

The Big 12 has performed so inconsistently in the non-conference this year that they may only get four teams in the tournament. ISU can be one of those teams, but they have lots of work to do.

Good win Hawks. Kills me to say it.

Fact: ISU lost the best player we have had in AT LEAST 11 years and maybe our best 3 point shooter EVER...we aren't going to be as good this year. Get over it. We can still make the tourney.

This is a critical point. An elite player makes everyone on the court look better, can step it up when needed.

It seemed odd to me that Clyburn was being hyped to fill this role as a 5th year senior when he has never been considered elite up to this point. He seems more likely to fill the role of Marquis Gilstrap (also had NBA build)

It's one game guys. It's a long season. I remember feeling like this last year after the Drake game.

You can't half-*** it for most of the game and then hope to chuck up a bunch of threes at the end of each half to make up for not playing hard.
What a gutless performance. They let a less talented and much younger and inexperienced team absolutely school them last night.

I keep seeing less talented. How in the world can you tell theyre less talented? Besides the color of their skin.

Lucious had 7 turnovers tonight, averaging almost 4.5 for the season. That's got to stop and stop soon. Coming down the court, seeming to start the offense and then A) chuck up a 3 or B) dribble around wildly or C) force and ill advised pass to the post that results in a turnoever. He's shooting 30% for the season, worst on the team by far. Until Lucious gets his **** figured out it's going to be a long season.

Maybe unproven would be a better word for it, they're young. The Iowa players I watched in CHA last night didn't really stand out from an individual standpoint.

Sagarin has Iowa #88 AND ISU #27. The wheels came off last night. Will did not look up to the task. Niang knew what to do. Babb looked like a clutch player last night.

I can agree with that. I just see non-athletic thrown out a lot, and I just wonder how that evaluation is being made.

One bad loss on the road on the resume is not a bad deal. If we lose another non-con game then we can panic.
