Any advice for drilling the holes for the fittings? I'm using plenty of 3-in-1 oil and I'm using a step bit. Still the last 1/8" or so seems to be the trickiest.

Not entirely true. I wouldn't just not return one (definitely illegal) or buy one off of craigslist (probably not legally obtained, but grey). Sometimes damaged kegs get decomissioned and sold by brewers or distributors because they aren't fit for re-use but are perfectly fine for turning into a kettle.

OK fine, I shouldn't say "ever" but more often than not any keg off craigslist is not legal. I got my *** chewed by somebody once at a garage sale for trying to buy a AE milk crate :twitcy:
