KU beat ISU 73-71 with the help of some funny calls down the stretch. If I remember correctly one was a phantom travel call on Sam Hill. The fix has been in for many a year.

I really hope we win a NT or four so we're not still talking about last night 27 years down the road...

I was at the game in Kansas City. Cyclone fans were loud.

I was present for that game at Kemper. Sammy drove left, got hammered and threw in a hook shot. The whistle blew and we all assumed Sammy was headed to the line for the "and one". But no, wave it off and call traveling - game over...

My eldest is a freshman at ISU this year and I recounted that story for him as we commiserated over Saturday night's game. To quote the Talking Heads, "it's the same as it ever was"...

Phantom travel on our way to tying score and if I recall he was getting bumped hard as well.

I remember non-Cy friends saying he wouldn't have made the FT's anyway, as if it was a given. Sammy was almost an 80% FT shooter.

Couple of corrections - I think it was 1985 against Oklahoma.

I can remember Johnny Orr talking about that play a couple years later on the call in show. He stated that the ref who made that call was barred from ever doing another Big 8 game.

A few years ago I attended the Barry Stevens benefit game at Hilton and I went through the autograph line. When I got to Sam Hill I told him that he got robbed on that traveling call. Got a big laugh out of him.

I am sure that I watched that game because all I have in my memory is a blur of bad calls in every game we have ever played against Kansas. God has mercifully wiped out specifics from my memory. I think they last about 10 years and then fade into a blur.

Unless I'm reading this wrong- no, it was definitely KU

It was the 1985-1986 season, with Big 8 tournament in March, 1986. I just read a "recap" on a KU fansite. Their version says, "With KU up 73-71, Hornacek intercepted a pass, drove down court and dished to Sam Hill. There were two whistles, one for a travel and one for a foul on Greg Dreiling. The officials determined the travel occured first so there was no foul. As the buzzer had gone off, the game was over."

They conveniently leave out the part where Sammy made the hook shot and if he did move his feet, it was because he got hammered by huge Greg Dreiling!

My personal list of egregious ISU basketball officiating-induced "bad beats":
1) Elite 8 versus Michigan State - Paul Shirley double-foul / wave off basket / Shirley fouls out / MSU ball;
2) Sammy Hill "phantom travel" versus KU in Big 8 Championship;
3) 2013 KU @ ISU;

Whoops, I was wrong about Oklahoma. I went to to the cyclone.com website and saw that we lost to Oklahoma 73-71 in the 1985 tourney, thought that was the game. Lost again by 73-71 to Kansas in 1986.

You know, I think we did get screwed in that OU game as well. And I think it also involved a travel being called on Sam Hill.
