Was out with some friends last night and one friend, who is a Drake alum, said Coach Rutter is joining the new Drake staff. I don't see anything official on it so I was wondering if anyone here had heard anything. Not surprised, if true. Rutter was too qualified for his Director of Operations role with us.

Googled "Drake message board" and found that they do have one (who knew?). There is one post in a thread about their new coach...

Hearing that Jeff Rutter, DBO for Hoiberg at ISU may be joining Ray's staff at Drake as a coach........

Ray Giacoletti is our new head coach...

who knew Drake had enough fans for a message board?!?

Really big loss with Rutter leaving. I think he probably helped Hoiberg as much as anyone the last few years. Hopefully, Hoiberg is even more ready to go on his own.

Rutter is a great guy as well as coach (technically not a coach in his current role). Will be missed for sure.

However, great opportunity to bring someone new in with some recruiting connections ;)

This sounds retarted, but why not bring in someone like Brackins for recruiting....Young guy, has great connections on the West Coast. Why the hell not? Doesn't need to coach, just recruit.

Rutter wasn't recruiting for Iowa State. The guy that replaces him won't be either.

Did the NCAA up the number to 4 assistants can be on the road?
Rutter may not have been on the road, but he was involved in scouting (tapes) to determine who we should be recruiting. Plus, it is all about connections, so even if the new staff member cannot travel the hire will be big for recruiting.

Did Rutter do much recruiting for the previous staff, when he was an assistant? Obviously, he's not doing any now as the DOBO.

Any regular assistant is going to do some recruiting. I think Luca might have been a guy Rutter was the guy on. But he wasn't a so-called recruiting assistant.

Right before McDermott left, he hired Nurse and Grayer and Rutter became the DOB. He kept that position under Hoiberg.

Rutter has been up for a few small school head coaching the last couple of years and i think his son has graduated from high school, so this might be a time when he wants to get back into it again.

IIRC, Rutter was the first coach, assistant or otherwise, who offered Royce White a scholarship. I think I remember Royce saying something about that.

Would love to get a grizzled veteran coach on the bench. Not that Fred needs it, but I think it would be huge. Should place a call to Carmody, former NW coach. Has some good connections, can run a practice, and can break down tape.

Flip Saunders would be better...

Like the idea of a former head coach in transition, but Carmody is a system coach (slow boring) and not sure it would be a benefit to have him on the bench

I'd take a college coach like Carmody over Saunders- recent experience and contacts in recruiting. Plus, maybe a player like Crawford would transfer from NW to ISU for his senior season.

If a position does open up, I am all for getting Tubby's assistant who was the lead for Vaughn and Reid Travis.
