I know it's en vogue to bash Bruce, and I'm displeased with what he did at/to ISU, but from the article it actually sounds like the Louisiana Tech AD was not doing too bad under him. Both money-making programs were in the top 25 with coaches he hired.

From the above linked article...

During Van De Velde’s tenure as athletics director, Louisiana Tech has enjoyed success both athletically and academically. He led the hiring of head football coach Sonny ***** in 2010 and head men’s basketball coach Mike White in 2011, both of who coached their respective teams to top 25 national rankings this past season and selections as WAC Coach of the Year. Most recently, he hired new head football coach Skip Holtz, who replaced ***** following his departure last December.

Van De Velde has also led a program that has had no major NCAA rules infractions during his tenure as AD and achieved a student-athlete graduate success rate of 76 percent in 2012 – the highest in Louisiana Tech history and one of the top graduation rates in the nation. All 16 men’s and women’s programs are currently penalty free with several having achieved their highest APR scores within the past few years.
[...]
From a facilities standpoint, Van De Velde led improvements to the soccer, baseball and softball complexes, and helped to initiate the Quest for Excellence campaign to raise private funds for the construction of a multi-purpose facility at the south end of Joe Aillet Stadium. The facility will provide student-athletes and coaches as well as members of the campus community with access to athletic training and wellness facilities, and office, conference and hospitality space.

This one time I was at Hardees and I threw some salt over my shoulder. BVDV happened to be right behind me, and he was so incensed that he challenged me to a duel.

We went outside, counted off the paces and shot each other multiple times. I died, BVDV came close but did not succumb. I can attest that he truly is the badass that he portrays himself to be.

I am drawing a blank on what this whole LE scandal was. Can someone bring me up to speed? But yes, I agree. VD is a supreme doosh-asaurus of the Alford and Chizek variety and I am happy he was fired.

I'm going to assume that everyone is referring to LE partying the night away in Columbia with the Mizzou co-eds.

While at ISU, I met with Bvdv on multiple occassions about casting a bronze statue to commemorate Cael Sanderson's accomplishments (159-0 and still at ISU). While the statue idea may look like a bust in hindsight, Bruce wasn't willing to invest in capturing the spirit and the excitement.

The man has no vision and couldn't sell ice water to people in hell.

I see what you did here, and I like it.

I still remember BVDV getting booed at a football game, that was fun.

Was he dressed like this?

I'm glad he and Geoffroy agreed to fire LE; not a popular, but in my mind a correct decision.
I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with the ultimate outcome. I've gone back and forth on that. A leader would have investigated and acted swiftly one way or another after the allegations came out, was my only point.

I agree that BVDV should have fired LE. My problem with the whole thing? He waited until it came out. He knew it was coming, because the Register came to him with the story before it was published. But he just sat there with his thumb up his *** and waited for it to come out. No attempts to minimize the damage to the school. No leadership. He just waited for Larry to get the bad press so that he could fire him and not take any of the responsibility.

Back in the day, one of the buses that tailgated next to us had photocopied pictures of BVDV posted on the windows of their bus with PORN STAR slapped beneath the picture. That's how I'll always remember him.

Never mind that when LE was initially asked about the photos by Van De Velde, he lied about what they pertained to? Also, it was obvious at the presser that President Geoffroy was the ultimate decision maker in this.

I love his wiki page! The ommissions are yummy...and sad.

I just visited that too. It's one of the most meticulously edited and cited wikipedia pages I've ever seen. By comparison, Jamie Pollard has no wikipedia page. Sometimes I think this board goes a little crazy bashing BVD and their love for Pollard. But there is definitely no comparison in who I'd prefer to be AD.

That page looks like it was edited as a resume.
