Yes, cannot have it both ways. If K was calling the plays that led to the great comeback, then was he also calling the plays in the first half when we looked like warmed over dog crap.

And if Coach K wasn't calling the plays that led to the great comeback, then he also wasn't calling the plays in the first half when we looked like warmed over dog crap.

Do I have the logic straight? Though I have no idea what the playcalling had to do with Grant's erratic first half arm, or the horrid fumble...

CPR was asked this year about mid-season coaching changes and said his experience with them was not positive (paraphrasing).

I would go with Mess called the first half of the KU and WVU games. It just seemed like CPR was bound and determine to make Messingham work out. I am sure it looks bad when you promote a guy from within and he totally falls on his face.

Folks should do a scan of Coach Klenakis on google. The guy has a REALLY impressive track record, an EXTREMELy well thought out approach and flat out understands the game.

I think we could be a much improved team with him at the helm.

Coach K also seems to have the age, experience, and personality to "own" the offense. Maybe that was what was taking place on the sideline of the WV game when Coach K and CPR were going at it. Coach K was telling people what to do and Coach Rhoads said "You're not the OC" and Coach K said "Not yet, but do you want to win the game?"

Didn't notice K and CPR going at it, anyone know what it was actually about? (I took the above as speculation)

Purely speculation, but I wouldn't have wanted to be in between it!

I have never been a fan of an offensive line coach being the coordinator, but we shall see.

Offensive line coach Chris Klenakis comes to Iowa State with 23 years of Division I experience. In 2012, Klenakis coached an offensive line that was third in the SEC in pass offense. His Razorback line allowed the third-fewest sacks in the SEC. Travis Swanson was named as an all-conference offensive lineman under Klenakis’ coaching last season. In 2010, Klenakis helped lead the Razorbacks to their first BCS Bowl (Sugar) in school history and UA boasted the top rusher and leading passer in the SEC. Before arriving at Arkansas, Klenakis was the offensive coordinator behind the high-powered Nevada Wolfpack offense. At Nevada, as offensive coordinator, he was at the helm of the “Pistol” offense that was prolifically productive, featuring a powerful running game led by the offensive line and, from 2007-09, current San Francisco 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Klenakis hold the distinction of being the first coordinator in NCAA Division I history to coach offenses that led the nation in rushing (2009) and passing (1997) during his career.

Even if CPR is promoting a position coach to OC, I believe Iowa law requires all state jobs to be advertised for 2 weeks to comply with federal equal opportunity laws. That being said, I'm OK with Coach K as OC. Question is who'll be the OL coach, Bill Bleil, or an outside hire?

I'm not thrilled because we've already gone the 'promote from within' route. Offense has sucked for a long time, we need new blood not just rotating deck chairs.

To be fair, it isn't as though Coach K was some long tenured coach under Messingham/CPR. He's only been here a year.

The problem with hiring coach K and moving more toward a kstate offense and pistol all the time is that the strength of this team moving forward is at WR. Next season we might arguably have one of the most talented wr core in the conference and we will be running the pistol.

My guess is if Coach K is promoted, he'll run an offense similar to the one ran at Arkansas combining the Pistol with a prolific passing attack. Seemed to work well at Arkansas as they had both #1 rushing and passing attacks in the SEC.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. Most important thing is whoever is the next OC is willing to change the run-pass ratio and what plays are called when based on the QB's strengths and the strengths of the rest of the offense. I think Mess did an absolutely awful job of this.

Mess seemed to like changing things as well as the "Old Dutch Farmer." Even then, the "Old Dutch Farmer" will change when absolutely necessary, not Mess.

I'd prefer fresh blood. It would take some real guts or stubbornness to try this approach twice in a row.

Even if Klenakis is poised to be outstanding, and he might be (if he's even the guy), this still has a huge PR problem to it.

This is faulty logic. Klenakis is not a Hermann prodigy. He is a well credentialed outsider. That Rhoads.should.have gone with last year.

I wasn't a fan of Herman and was happy for Mess. Became not a fan of his. So maybe Klenakis would be cut of a different cloth. Not a home-run hire by any means, but not a dud, either?

It appeared that we were making the transition to more pistol type formations during the season.

I would not be surprised if it is Kleinakis, and it could be a good move. Mess was really running offenses that were not of his design. Maybe that attributes for the lack of adjustments and effective game plans. I mean, not scoring on one opening drive is pretty indicative of bad game planning.

I get around
am I the only one who is waiting for austin to chime in on this thread....he is an active member here.

Austin is probably very busy getting Grand View ready for the National Championship game, Dec. 21st in Rome, Georgia. Good luck Austin and Mike Woodley! Bring a national championship back to Iowa!
