I'd be very happy to have Sage as a QB coach, but I would pass as an OC. I think I'd feel the same with Flynn. Want a big time guy for the OC spot and a tenacious recruiter for the other position coach spot.

Gus Malzahn was a high school coach when he was hired as OC for Arkansas and never coached at the college level. He turned out to be a good coach.

Heck of a coach...he also brought along 4 or 5 of the top recruits in the country. If CPR could find the next Gus it would be awesome!

Just because it worked out for him, or even in Hoiberg's case does not mean it'll turn out like that every time.

It really bothers me when people take outliers and point to them to make conclusions on probabilities that are nowhere near what the reality actually is.

Pretty sure I just read an article the other day where they said the main reason Nutt hired Gus was to get Mustain to come to Arkansas because he was deciding between ND and Arkansas. They said it was an unprecedented move and Gus didn't like being the OC their because Nutt wouldn't give him full rein of the offense.

Actually just found the article, its a great read. Interesting how he got a OC job at a BCS level. Could you imagine what would happen on here if this hire was an Iowa head football coach?!

I love Sage but he has zero experience calling plays at D1. Some will say that Fred did it in basketball but they are far from the same. I think Sage would be great but get some experience first.

I think that most of the people that want him hired, want him hired as a position coach not for OC.

Yep. I have absolutely no doubt he would be a great guy for molding young QBs. I think he would also be a very young and personable coach for recruiting.

I wouldn't just throw him out there to call an offense in the Big 12 though.

That's great but just pointing out that it is possible does not make it likely.

Just because it worked out for him, or even in Hoiberg's case does not mean it'll turn out like that every time.

I am just saying experience or lack of it at a given level doesn't mean they wont work out as a coach.

I think he could be a very good candidate to bring as a position coach, all while grooming him for OC. This of course would be if we went with a Wally type of hire.

It means the odds are lower. There's a reason the vast majority of hires are experienced.

Something not being impossible does not make it likely and is not a basis for judging if something will work out.

Someone wins the lottery every couple weeks, but that doesn't mean you are going to.

I think making him the QB coach would be a great idea and see where it goes from there. No reason to "groom" him or anything as he would just be starting his coaching career. He would be ecstatic to be a BCS QB coach to start out I'm guessing.

Love how we've come full circle, and around again, on all OC related topics. These tight-lipped lengthily searches are maddening sometimes.

At this point, due diligence understood...but an internal hire/promotion would be very disappointing. Also, no way it will be Sage or Flynn, as much as we all like them.
