Can someone compare NC Central to a team we have played already?
They are good only as defensive rebounders, score and play defense best of all teams in their conference, looks like they ran away with their conference tournament, close in turnovers to us, block twice as many shots, and steal more than us, shoot free throws 73%-69% for us. BUT SLO PLAYING, so sttats are low scoring games. Might be a Purdue or Northwestern equivalent.

2013-14 OVERALL RANKINGS

POINTS PER GAME 73.9 89th OVERALL

REBOUNDS PER GAME 35.5 136th OVERALL

ASSISTS PER GAME 14.8 51st OVERALL

FIELD GOAL PCT .462 77th OVERALL

POINTS ALLOWED 58.5 7th OVERALL

REBOUNDS PER GAME 23.7 179th OVERALL

BLOCKS PER GAME 4.0 128th OVERALL

STEALS PER GAME 7.8 26th OVERALL

RPI/BPI is about 100

Slowdown team. Need to run these guys.

Both Iowa and WV like to Press and do it pretty darn well and neither of them pressed us during the games. NC Central comes out with a press and they will lose and lose big. There is a reason why teams we have played who press didn't.

I think if your going to do a lot of press, it's better suited for a smaller/less physical ball handlers, and Kane/Niang don't fit that bill. They would have an easier time passing out of a double against a smaller guard.

I do recall Morris having some issues with a press against BYU and maybe Michigan also. Now that he's matured, i think he'd do much better with it.

I'm sure there are some teams that would give ISU fits with some game long presses, but ISU is also built to break that down, and rack up a lot of easy buckets with fluid ball handling and passing. Iowa pressed Baylor a ton last year and the rims got a workout that night.

We have only 10 turnovers a game and we shoot more threes (led B12) and more twos by a long shot than most teams. We are proficient in handling the ball and double teams and presses are tough when so many people dribbler the ball for us.

NC Central did not press Morgan State at all in the title game. They do play aggressive defense out along the arc in an attempt to disrupt the passing lanes, and force TOs. Looks like they play straight man defense. They had issues with Morgan St's 7 ft center on defense in both denying ball entry to the post and stopping him from scoring. I like Niang to go big in this game.

Once they got a 6-7 point lead they tried to slow the game down by milking the clock(even with 9 minutes left in the game). They pass the ball fairly well around the arc, but occasionally would wait too long to start trying to get to the hoop resulting in some turnovers on out of control drives. Seems like they make their living on shooting outside jumpers and dribble drive. Not a lot of moves down low, or cutting to the hoop action.

Overall I like the Cyclones in this one.

Let's not forget that this is NCCentral's first ever trip to the NCAA's. There could very likely be a stars in their eyes factor here as well.

I guess NCCU coach knows Fred pretty well.

They haven't played a top 150 RPI team in 2014. Let that sink in.

Don't take anything or anyone for granted in the tournament. Should we win? Yes. Will we win? They don't call it march madness for no reason....

Jesus people, I hate H****** as much as anyone else, but it was almost half of my lifetime ago. Most of our players probably had no idea Iowa State even existed back then. It happened closer to Fred's senior year than his first year as head coach for us. We've played in the tourney plenty of times since and have won games against good teams. Get over it. It was a fluke. Can it happen again? Sure. Will it happen again? Not with Fred Hoiberg as our coach.

The focus should be on what we are not facing this year, which is another road game like the other 4 of the last 5 NCAA losses; 1) Mich St in Michigan, 2) North Carolina in North Carolina, 3) Kentucky in Kentucky, and 4) Ohio St in Ohio.
