Try staying at the Fairfield Inn close to Laguardia in Queens. You can catch a free
shuttle from Laguardia to the Fairfield....assuming you fly into Laguardia.
Then walk about 10 blocks to the Subway. Get a week's all you can ride pass for
about $20.

This is how I did it when we went to the Pinstripe...saved a
lotta $'s as long as your willing to walk a little. No cabs needed.

Sometimes, you can get the hotel shuttle bus driver to take you to the train station. Give him a nice tip and ask him for a phone number to call when you get back. The New York train system is wonderful.

Agreed, great place to be mugged!

It is not likely that you will be mugged. Taking the hotel shuttle to the train station eliminates the possibility . . . unless you do something stupid that would get you robbed even in Ames. I do it because I don't want to walk the 10 blocks in Queens, but save my legs for walking around Manhattan.

Mugging is like way down in the Subway system. The biggest thing now is those CD selling guys, the "you broke my glasses" guys, and if you're stupid enough to be on your phone on the subway, the grab and run out the closing subway door guys.

Don't be stupid. You'll be targeted if you're wearing something ISU. Wear a jacket.

I'm hoping we don't hear any stories of Cyclones fans getting taken in a "grab and run" when they pull out a wad of cash to buy tickets from a fake scalper.

That happened in Cleveland one time over a ticket that cost $20. The guy grabbed my friends money and took off, the dude tripped and skidded his face across the pavement and was in obvious pain, his money and tickets went everywhere. My friend grabbed a ticket, his $20 and we went to the game. (I already had my ticket) I think he got robbed of everything but no cared because he was a ******.

Before we freak folks out, I should say that I didn't hear any stories about anyone having any problems during the Pinstripe Bowl, even though we had more people, during New Years, and up in the Bronx for the game.

You should update your sig to our basketball record. Night and day difference between our football record and basketball record.

NY was flat out great to us. We took shuttles, buses, subway and cabs. In fact I left my phone in the cab after closing up the bars and the next passenger went out of his way to get ahold of me the next day. He wouldn't even take a reward. Most New Yorkers are just like you.

I've been living in the NY area and working in the city for a year now, and will tell you, its a hell of a lot safer than a lot of other places in the country, parts of Iowa included.

NYC is a great place and is safe. Safest city of it's size in the world. Yes, the subway can be interesting but it's safe, cheap and is the best transportation. If you notice that every box car is full but one is empty, stay out of it. If you need to look at a map step aside or go into a coffee shop. It's all about common sense.

From the UConn board, it sounds like the most likely crime that will happen is that you'll buy fraudulent tickets. Can't believe how many of them have been ripped off.

Hahahhahaha... I can smell the empty subway card phenomena now... Don't miss this, but man, I can smell and identify a creepy homeless guy a block away now.

Seriously though, the neighborhoods people will be mostly in are safe. I still feel safer walking in NYC at night than I do in freaking downtown St. Paul, MN. Fact is, I was actually safer as well.

A couple years ago park slope had a serial rapist. Within a day of the 2nd reported attempt, the cops were all over the place patrolling with lights on at night. It was a little strange, and a lot police state-like, but definitely safe. They did this for a week until they caught the guy. That's the most crime/police issues I remember in 8 years in NYC.

Remember, there are approximately 34,500 police officers in NYC... There are definitely neighborhoods to avoid at night, but I never ended up on one of those, even by accident.

I've felt 10x safer in NYC than I have walking around in East Cleveland... hell even driving in East Cleveland. The police have even said to not stop at a red light in East Cleveland because there are gangs that will come from the shadows and will literally pick your car up, put them on cinder blocks and make you get out of the car or seriously harm you.
