Ever heard of innocent until proven guilty?

While I get what you are trying to say and the point you want to prove - Yes, our athletes are ambassadors and shouldn't be out therein the first place. But sometimes these situations arise and you become a part of something you didn't want to be in at all. Bystanders become enveloped in stuff who had no part in what started. Its not always as easy to just "walk away" from a gigantic mob that is happening around you, let alone avoid the human nature of wanting to stand there and witness it.

Suspending players without any proof of damaging property or other actual wrongdoing would be dumb by our coaches. If there is video of an ISU athlete tearing down a street light or throwing a bottle at a cop or w/e then YES absolutely suspend him or her, but my guess is that very few of them, if any, were in those crowds. And if they were I highly doubt they were involved in throwing bottles or breaking stuff. My guess is some of the people were just really dumb regular ISU students or people who aren't students at ISU/from out of town.

I am not saying they should be suspended but an athletic team isnt a court of law. If a coach wants to suspend a player for being in the wrong place at the wrong time they can do that.

I saw my daughter in that video. Bummer.

I feel for you. First year my son is 21 for VEISHEA, so I have been worried this year. He texted me that he was safely at home when he heard about the riots knowing what I am like. Thankful for the massive group engineering project he was working on.

FYI. For those of you who think you "have a right" to stand there and watch and therefore are not complicit in a riot, I direct you to Iowa Code 723.3.

https://coolice.legis.iowa.gov/Cool...llinfo&service=IowaCode&ga=83&input=723#723.3

And it may be worthy to note the part of 723.1 that states "A person who willingly joins in or remains a part of a riot, knowing or having reasonable grounds to believe that it is such, commits an aggravated misdemeanor".

I don't disagree with a word you say. I just don't think it would be in the best interest of our coaches to suspend players for just "being there" without any proof of wrongdoing or lawbreaking. I would never want to be a coach that did that to my players and I would never want to play for a coach who suspended me just for "being in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Not saying it is right, but there are times where student athletes are guilty of breaking the law and still don't get suspended. So to suspend them when they didn't break any laws would be dumb, just my opinion.

I hate to say this, but I think it is about time to cancel it for good. I'm embarrassed to say that I was at ISU when this all first started. I thought and said it was stupid at the time and it is just as stupid now. Rioting is not entertainment. If we can't all see that then we don't deserve to have nice things.

If you want to turn over a car, make sure that you are turning over your own car.

I agree with this. Plus, it sounds like they were there, but were smart enough to leave because they knew the situation they were in. Now if they were there all night and instigating the riot, then they would definitely get in trouble.

So let's take a look at what the celebration is supposed to be about. From Wikipedia...

I remember when I was young (man I feel old today) we would go as a family and see the parade, eat the little cherry pie things and have a generally good time at our favorite place. Now, 20 years later, I wouldn't take my family there. That tells you all you need to know about the direction this celebration has taken and why it needs to be redesigned top-to-bottom with a focus on family and student activities rather than partying. I don't know what the solution is, but I'm pretty sure it should be shut down for 5 years to find out.

Just curious as to why you wouldn't take your family there. We have been taking our family to VEISHEA every year for the past 10 years. This was actually the first year the majority of us are not able to go and my kids are so bummed. We do the parade and all the family-friendly activities on campus. They still exist, they just get over-shadowed and in this case forgotten by the drunk idiots who will ruin it. We see farm animal, ride horses, do science experiments, watch glass blowing, eat ice cream, do flight simulations, and all sorts of other activities.

While I get what you are trying to say and the point you want to prove - Yes, our athletes are ambassadors and shouldn't be out partying on a Tuesday night.

My guess is some of the people were just really dumb regular ISU students or people who aren't students at ISU/from out of town.

While I agree with your thought that we should wait until all the facts are known, you also proved my point when you said "sometimes these situations arise and you become a part of something you didn't want to be in at all. Bystanders become enveloped in stuff who had no part in what started.".

That is how being a bystander can turn into a participant and why you make the decision to distance yourself from the beginning. Kids make mistakes, adults make mistakes, etc but it is how you position yourself that can determine how easily you can get sucked into something bigger than you intended.
