Why does it matter if they were ISU students or not?? An environment that has the potential to create a riot must be dealt with. If Iowa State is the sponsor of the festival, they, and Ames PD, are responsible for security for all involved.

The only way to continue this is to somehow close off CampusTown and make it admission with Student ID only, and I'm not totally sure that's feasible...

This is golden. I was in a fraternity and we spent countless hours during VEISHEA working on our float for the parade. Obviously there are some that fall into your stereotype, but c'mon man, I knew both greeks and non-greeks that fit the bill.

Just don't generalize people like that. Makes you look like an idiot.

Not soapboxing here, but I spent the majority of my Friday nights during VEISHEA finishing our float or helping with the parade for the next morning. Sure I enjoyed myself Saturday.

Anyways, carry on

Yeah, the greek-bashing is just pretty weak. I'd guess the percentage of people from greek houses that went out would be similar to the percentage of the general student population that went out, if not slightly less because they probably have more stuff going on.

I'd say we can just blame this on ****** people, no matter where they live or what affiliations they have...

^ good read on mob mentality, because lets be honest, we aren't getting any work done today.

"In other words, bystanders don’t have to be egging on the violence; the bewildered on-looking eyes of spectators can be all it takes to reinforce criminal behavior, he said."

But in a court of law setting, bystanders did nothing wrong. Did they help stimulate the people? Probably

I'm all in favor of canceling VEISHEA. If it returns in future years, cut it way back. Why does it need to be a week long celebration? A Fri-Sun event is easily sufficient.

I think next year should be cancelled entirely and I wouldn't be mad if Leath handed down a 5 year ban.

Question -- are there surveillance cameras in Campustown?
if the cancel veishea my guess is they will still riot

Putting up cameras in campus town is thinking small picture. That's the first thing that is going to get destroyed by the people rioting. Throw up a couple of drones and equip them with cameras and tear gas. Email Obama. He owes us, Iowa is the only reason he's president right now.

Boy - you have about every sorry excuse in the book, don't you?

"I'm couldn't hear the bull horn over the obvious riot". "I couldn't get out of the way of the people carrying a couch down Welch".

Whatever.

And you certainly are judgemental and have a holier than thou attitude don't you?

If you're taking an active role in being violent or disturbing others than of course you're involved...if you're standing on the outside of "the mob" watching and doing nothing wrong, I see no problem with that...so sue me.

The holier than thou crowd on CF amazes me...must be nice to be so perfect.

You're blind if you don't think there are 3-4 Frats and Sororities that put a black eye on the greek community.

No doubt, but with the rate you are bashing greek students, the same exact thing can be said about non-greeks. They just aren't affiliated with a group so it is hard to stereotype them.

I just don't understand why you keep pointing out a couple houses and saying they were a big part of it, then retreating and saying greek houses are a good thing. College is a good thing too (well that can be argued), but there are bad apples in any "group" you put people into. So I would suggest you stop attacking the greek houses and realize this was a campus-wide or apparently non-ISU student problem.

Not that this is really important in light of other things, but I'm sure the football and basketball recruits and their families will be really impressed if there is more rioting this weekend during their visits, or if the VEISHEA activities get cancelled. Moron students.

Those 2005 riots were pretty crazy.

This. The whole "they'll riot anyway" line of logic is completely faulty. The "Dry" VEISHEA back in the late 90's, after that guy got killed, was a super unpopular decision. No riots, though. 2005, like you said, was tame.

That said, if Leath cancels the events planned for this weekend, then there might be some folks who still want to go nuts, but I'm guessing the police will be out in force, and put to bed anything before it gets out of hand.

Yep. "They weren't ISU students" is a long standing excuse of the troubles at VEISHEA. But they are locals, or friends of locals, or guests of ISU students, or Alums, or just random morons. Doesn't matter.

They're all there due to an ISU sanctioned event. And unfortunately that means ISU is ultimately responsible for the future of the event.

The only thing I can see that may stop this is to literally shut down the campus town bars during the week - completely, or at least very early. And what business is going to stand for that?

It really is funny how people just assume that it was the greeks based off the stereotypes. do we party? Damn right we do.
But do we also raise millions of dollars for philanthropy? Yes. that goes really un noticed.

What can the administration really do to end "week long drunk week" in the short term? Cancel the academic/cultural side? It doesn't make sense to me to cancel Veishea for your School when it is clearly one of your biggest traditions. Put more effort into patrolling high volume areas like Welch Ave and increase penalties if you have too, but cancelling may only bring more issues.
