By nothing different, you mean tripling/quadrupling/whatever the normal student population there in a bar area that has always been 21, therefore meaning fewer and smaller bars that can't hold that influx of people? What campus has such a large influx of people like this?

Every campus has events, many much, much larger than VEISHEA - including places with much more expressive student bodies and you don't see them going rambo in the middle of the night. Think about all the places that have incredibly large sporting events like college football and those rarely spill out into riots, and if so, it's typically a one-time thing, not a trend over several decades.

Remember back in 2006 and 2007 when there were no wristbands, the weather was perfect, cops walked around handing out tshirts and coozies, concerts were all on central campus, and there were no riots? Yeah, what happened?!
In recent history, those VEISHEAs were perfect.

I like how people act like rioting is something that frequently happens at veishea. It amazes me too but y'all do realize its been an entire decade since the last one?

Also, as to the 'huge black eye', its literallly going to be in the news for a day. I can think of at least 3 other schools with riots just this month. Most won't remember ISU for the riot, just as most outsiders have no idea about past riots.

The 1992 crowd was chanting "Less Filling, Taste Great" as I recall. It was a real political statement, let me tell you.

Didn't Chief Ballantine make some statement effectively tying it to the LA Riots? Citing racial tensions?

As long as people "look forward to seeing", "hoping for", glorifying and making fun of these riot acts, then riot will happen.

One way to reduce and hopefully, eliminate this is by handing out tough punishments: hefty fines, expulsion, permanent record, prison time, etc that people understand that "it's not funny anymore to riot".

If there is a live feed whenever the press conference happens please post a link or preferably start a new thread with the link.
I'm looking for the same thing but not having luck. Bobby La Geese and IowaStateUNews maybe the best options as of now.

10 years happened. The current class has no memory of '04 riots, and probably don't care.

History repeats itself, and always will.

It's still got a pretty lasting impact within the state, though. Hell, the first time I'd ever even heard of VEISHEA was 2004. I've since learned what VEISHEA is ACTUALLY about, but I would bet there are a lot of people who are in the same boat as I am and won't ever be able to stop associating VEISHEA with drunken riots.

For me, it's not about whether it's in the news or not, how often it happens, whether people have idea or not. For me: there should not be any riots at VEISHEA.
It's supposed to be a celebration, not riot. It's supposed to be a feel-good Spring celebration that gives a good feeling for the university, students, business and community. If we haven't had any riot for almost a decade, then the attitude shouldn't be "we're due to have a riot now as it's almost a decade".

Again, time for students to be smart: it's their University, it's their town, it's their campustown. They should have a pride and mindset to keep VEISHEA free from riot.
