Here's an interesting question and answer with one of the people behind the show.

Q: There’s something frustrating about his death, too. We want his death to be due to the actions of one of our heroes. We all want Arya to raise up his severed head in triumph. We’re denied the death we want.
Benioff: And that’s something we admire from the books. George doesn’t give you want you want right off the bat. A lot of people would have loved, after the Red Wedding, you would have seen Arya or Jon Snow kill Walder Frey and Roose Bolton. You want that, it’s a natural instinct to want to see your favorite characters avenged. At the same time, a deeper side of you wouldn’t really want that because it’s too easy and wouldn’t seem remotely real. There’s something wonderful about reading the book, the way Joffrey dies, because it’s completely unexpected. No hero came back to vanquish the evil king.

FYI, potential spoilers in the full interview.

Does this mean he's going to give us what we want eventually? :wideeyed:

I wasn't sure if it was the wine/goblet or the pie/birds, that was poisoned, because they zoomed-in on the bloody bird when Joffrey cut the pie and I thought he was the only one to eat some. But I know some of you are "in the know" due to the books and all, so it must of been the wine/goblet that was poisoned.

I'll put it this way. After reaching the end of the 5th book, I'm still basically in the same frame of mind that I was in during the 3rd book. I'm happy about some things, sad about others, wishing some things would happen, hoping that other things don't, Hodoring some things get Hodored, and most of all, still completely gripped by the story.

Even in the book I was thinking the pie at first too. But, doesn't everyone eat from the pie? (TWSS)

Yep, both Sansa and Olenna touched that goblet. As did Margeary. All three have great motives to want the little jerk dead. The fool looked like he did, and he was sure on-hand quickly to get Sansa to leave. And is the fool smart/sober enough to be acting alone? And Oberyn was at the wedding (and is called The Viper because of his use of poison on his sword in battles), and had vowed vengeance, and said something to that effect to Cersei and Tywin right before the death. Lots and lots of question marks.

Also the sorcery reach of Melisandre that seemed to have just guided events of the death of other kings to some extent.

It's like a wedding cake, big one for display then everyone gets their own little piece served.

Now that you mention it.. I think they made that more clear in the book didn't they? So, at this point we don't really know if it was the pie or the wine?

Yeah, I've read the books and know Benioff and Weiss know the rest of the story, so I tend to try to read into what they say a bit.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there's some detail that made me think the pie, cup and wine were all 3 equally likely as I read it…which the show backs up. There's 3 things that could have been accessed by countless people without even considering sorcery ;-)

I found it funny when the show played up Renly's homosexuality that some people had read the books and completely missed the signs of it…to which GRRM pretty much replied 'of course it was there'. Case where some show watchers were more "experts" than some book readers.

yeah, if you re-read the books, it's obvious. Although, there is A LOT of obvious foreshadowing of other things on the re-read.

So was it the pie or the wine? What was it that killed joff? I seem to recall that they had a shot of the bottom of his glass when he pored the wine on Tyrion, and at the bottom of the goblet was a white glob of something. Was that the delivery system?

And of COURSE the Viper was making eyes at Tyrell. Totally not in the books, but made me laugh.

We can't say exactly what it was, because that gives it away. But yes, it was something put in there.

What was the marking on it? Can anyone say what region the symbol was from. I didn't really pay much attention to it last night or think about it until now because at the time I had no idea what was about to happen.

I'd have to see a screenshot of what you saw to know if that's what it was. If it's the same thing that was in the book (which I believe it was), it wouldn't likely have a marking on it.

marking on the cup? Not sure. It was the wedding cup, though. The cup that both the bride and groom drink from at the reception.
