Just plowing through the Lindy's preseason mag and I see that they have Tom Herman listed as the No. 2 hottest coordinator in the country. Thought that you guys might be interested in that being that he was in Ames not too long ago.

In all fairness, Ames is a black hole for offenses up to this point.

Does herman call the plays at Ohio State? I think he is a good OC. However, I think he will make a lousy head coach someday.

Herman will make a great head coach after next year. He had more talent at Rice than he did at ISU and has coached for some great ones.

Herman was brutal at Iowa State... brutal.

Given the past few years, I wonder how much of that was Rhoads, not Hermann. Though I do think he's a guy who can only succeed with 5* talent, he doesn't know how to build an offense around the talent he has.

The more I think about it, the more I am led to this conclusion. I think he was really handcuffed by Rhoads.

Didn't he do really well at Rice?

You could look at it that way or that he went to Ohio State where Urban Meyer is an offensive genius and that is helping him... who knows.

All I know is he was horrible at Iowa State.

We got to two bowls in three years, and won one of them. With players he didn't recruit. But it is a lot easier to be a great OC if you get a lot of talent coming in.

I actually did a statistics project comparing Herman and Messingham on 3 and Outs per game and they were nearly the same. Herman had a higher max but Messingham had a higher average (just barely). I think the difference was we at least got some production out of Herman's play calling. He drew up some good drives but I don't necessarily buy that he was that much better than Messingham when he was here. Not suggesting I want Messingham over Herman, but I honestly don't know that Herman could get the job done here either.

Ohio State's offense isn't that great these days. Players like Braxton Miller and Carlos Hyde are great. I'm not giving too much credit to Herman because he puts Miller on the field and he makes incredible plays, like faking out all three EIU linebackers on one play last year.

It's hard to run a spread offense with the least threatening group of WR in the conference. Talent wise it was a one dimensional offense. He didn't do anything with the resources he had, but IMO it still got worse when he left.
