Just to play devil's advocate (and it's a bit of an aside, as I agree he's probably stronger, obviously leaner, and likely quicker), some post players benefit from having... uh let's say... a bit bigger derriere as it helps them create space when working with their back to the basket. Which of course Niang is as good doing if not better than facing up. I remember this was part of Jared Sullinger's game.

I don't expect Niang's production to go down in any way shape or form - quite the opposite - but I will be keeping an eye on that aspect of his game.

Again, I'm playing devil's advocate.

Fizer's backside had its own zip code, college defenders didn't stand a chance getting backed down by that dump truck.

The plus is that he wont be playing against the 5 as much with McKay on board for second semester. Niang will still be beefier than many 4s that will guard him.

Was thinking about a best case NBA comparison for Niang (admittedly I am not an NBA expert) but there are some similarities between his game and Kevin Love's game (albeit Love is an NBA All-star). Love is listed as a PF/Center and is listed at 6'-10" yet his combine height was 6'-7.75". Not sure if Niang's 6'-8" is "in shoes" but if he grows even an inch or two more it could really help raise his draft profile. Can't wait to see what the New and Improved Georges does this year!

FWIW Love made the All Height Liars Team per ESPN.

PF: Kevin Love (“6-10”): He measured at 6' 7.75," but that isn’t what makes Kevin Love’s height deception so dastardly. It’s that K-Love is photographed at the height level of a “6-8” Derrick Williams. Now some would say, “This makes his rebounding all the more impressive.” I’m not so forgiving. Turn in your World Championship trophy, you dirty heightener, you.

I'm one of the biggest Georges Niang fans in the world, but in no way will he ever become Kevin Love. His best NBA comparison is Matt Bonner IMO. Georges could find a niche like that I think, hit threes at a decent clip and score some garbage buckets off put backs. You could do a lot worse than Bonner, who made a nice living averaging 5-6 points and 15-16 minutes.

I'm guessing at 25 lbs lighter the joke this year will be that they can now slide a whole ream of paper under Niang when he jumps.

How did you go with Bonner over Boris Diaw? Diaw and Niang's game are practically Identical. Bonner is a three point specialist. I have no Idea how you came up with that comparison.

He's a mix between Diaw and Paul Millsap if I had to make a comparison but there really are no comparisons, Georges has a completely unique game which could hurt him or help him when it comes to getting a look in to the league.

It's difficult for me to see Georges making it in the NBA, but I'm terrible at judging NBA talent. I don't think his jumper will adjust to NBA 3 point range real well. There just doesn't look like there's much more range in it unless he remakes it. I could see him getting minutes as a Luke Walton type.

Offensively, it's a decent enough comparison. But, even at the NBA level, Kevin Love is a plus defender, and an elite rebounder. Niang, at the college level, is a minus defender and a minus rebounder.

It wasn't many but I definitely saw him hit a few NBA threes last year.

I could see George being successful in a Boris Diaw-type role in a best case scenario. Bonner is a 3 point shooter that plays without the ball 99% of the time. If George has a chance to be successful at the next level he has to have the ball in his hands facilitating. His ability to facilitate and force a big to play on-ball defense is the reason he is as successful and what offsets his lack of athleticism.

I think Diaw is more athletic than Georges but Diaw is a good comparison. I don't think Georges and Bonner have the same skills, I meant that I could see Georges finding an NBA niche like Bonner's.

I just have a hard time seeing Georges make it in the NBA. They love their height measurements. That said, the one way he can do it would be to slim down and prove he can guard the 3. Doug McDermott turned himself into an NBA 3 and that is what Georges is going to have to do.

That just isn't going to happen.

I saw Georges and Matt in Panera the other day and he looks like a completely different person. Very thin, I'm hoping he puts on enough muscle so that he doesn't get pushed around. Will be interesting to see if he gets any quicker with his moves offensively. EXCITED!

just looking at him, he may actually be heavier now than he was before. looks like he replaced fat with muscle rather than just losing fat. wonder what the weight comparison would be in those two photos.
