If someone needs to google "What to do in a riot?" then this person needs to have his/her intelligence seriously questioned.

YOU LEAVE the premise ASAP ! Don't cry foul when you get sprayed or tear gassed by the cops because you "were just there watching".

In this Ames riot, there's no one stopping you from leaving the area. It wasn't in the locked indoor arena. There was no Berlin Wall with soldiers with machine guns. Stating that "you can't leave" because you don't know how to get away is somewhat insulting.

Don't be part of the mob. Yes, there's always guilty by association and the cops don't have luxury of cherry picking if there are a lot of people

And honestly, I've been in worse places where VEISHEA riot was just a piece of cake. And I always knew that the best thing to do is to leave the area.

Tuesday, dude. Tuesday.

Yeah, but the late night events and friends coming for them is what gets people amped up for veishea week. I don't think students would get as worked up if the only events planned for the week was the parade and some day time stuff. Less college kids and friends would show up, less to get excited about.

"Hey buddy, do you want to drive 3 hours for a really bad parade?...... Yeah didn't think so."

It is a way to change the culture of the event without killing it. Make the whole thing family friendly.

Let's reverse that and say it's sporting events, unfortunately, that cause riots every few years. Would you be in favor of eliminating the events or doing the hard work of changing the culture?

Do we end football and basketball because dumpsters are overturned or couches are set on fire?

Have their been any continuing problems with uncontrollable riots that make national news after ISU sporting events?
VEISHEA had its second, third, fourth, and fifth chances. What do you expect the University to do? It was really an easy decision for them.

Not at all. I just don't know why you would heedlessly equate rioters and observers and give no latitude to people for not knowing (and following) proper riot protocol, especially when you seem to be taking such a position with little experience or understanding of what it was actually like to be there among the crowd.

I'll ask again: have you ever tried to rapidly escape a large crowd? Were you present for any of the VEISHEA riots? Have you ever exited a bar, anywhere, and found yourself smack dab in the middle of a riot? Unless you can answer "yes" to any of these questions, I don't see how you can so inflexibly conclude that so many people are at fault.

For what it's worth, google the phrase "what to do in a riot". You'll find a lot of varied and contradictory advice...some say GTFO as fast as you can, some say to stay put and wait for law enforcement to clear the area and guarantee you a safe exit. Even if there is a "standard operating procedure" for what to do in a riot, I don't know how you fault people for not knowing what it is.

Either you are arguing just to argue or you seriously lack common sense. You seriously think kids "in the middle of the riot" were desperately trying to escape!? That's complete BS, and I think you know it. They were drunk and they were having fun being lunatics.

If, hypothetically speaking, someone was in the middle of the crowd who didn't want to be there then I'm sure they knew exactly what they needed to do. Get out. Leave. You act like there should be some handbook on reacting to a riot. It isn't neurosurgery. Use your legs to exit the crowd of maniacs. It isn't near as complicated as you're trying to make it. You're either being overly sympathetic or super dramatic.

Anybody think this may hurt recruiting? I know the coaches seem to like to get official visits on Veishea week.

Easy solution for those like myself that are upset about it being canceled. Stop giving money to the university. The next time they call asking for money tell them no and tell them why. I have a feeling Leath just ****** off a ton of alumni. Donations to the university are going to start drying up.
I don't understand this line of thinking.

This was what I was hoping for. Hold the parade, etc. on Saturday and wrap everything up by mid-afternoon so there's nothing taking place into the evening. I know students would probably still bullseye that weekend for partying but you'd have to think it would curb things during the week.

Not at all. I might be one of the few that actually like the university sanctioned events. I liked taking my kids to the parade and to the department demonstrations. I was never into the drinking all day part even when I was attending ISU.

I understand it completely - he's upset that he doesn't have his university-sanctioned right to act like a drunken asshat on campus anymore.

I don't either, my initial reaction as an alum when I heard about this was being really embarassed that the one time ISU makes national news(non-sports related) in the last year was for this.

While I don't blame Leath for the VEISHEA decision, because he really was in between a rock and a hard place, he overall has made some terrible decisions in past couple years. The Bubu fiasco is one thing. I've heard from countless people who work for the university that he fires valuable University employees who have been there for decades with no cause.

Seems like a guy that's on a power trip. He should takes notes from the job Geoffroy did..

Yep. Hearing from Ames people that he is replacing the oldtimers with His Yes Men. Not a good thing in my opinion.

I don't think that's really how it usually works for state employees.
