I said this a couple days ago, but I still don't understand why Iowans feel that we (meaning fellow Iowans) should be obligated to root for a team just because they are from Iowa. I understand it even less when it comes from fellow Iowa State fans. Or is it only Drake and UNI that we should root for? Because I doubt very many of you would suggest we root for Iowa if they were the only state team in the tourney. Why are Drake and UNI any different? Because we don't see them as a threat for publicity and recruits? Kind of of a condescending attitude if that's the case. Football is one thing, as we don't directly compete with them as they are in different divisions. But we're all division one in basketball.

Speaking of the media pissing in the wound, is anyone else legitimately mad about Belmont choking at the end last night? That was our chance to never hear about Hampton again.

Belmont losing that game effectively killed the rest of the night for me. Didn't watch a game the next hour or two and fell asleep watching.... somebody.

ALL I cared about in that game was getting the 2001 monkey off our back.

(and I hate Duke)

This is a great post and rep was given. Mirrors my thoughts exactly.

I think this reinforces the reality that the quality of basketball in the mid-major conferences like the MVC is just not that strong

Um, the Sun Belt conference is probably more "mid-major" than the Missouri Valley. If they had lost to Villanova on that type of shot, your argument would make more sense.

I never said that WKU was not from a mid-major conference. By the way, I would put the Sun Belt above the MVC in terms of having talented players. But the bottom line is that Drake was a 5 seed due to winning the MVC and WKU was a 12 seed. Clearly, Drake was seeded too highly. They really deserved to be seeded somewhere from 10-12 in my opinion. Really a moot point after Sunday because WKU will lose...just as Drake would have had they won today's game.

I agree with you. I have nothing against Drake, but never felt like I had to jump on the bandwagon like so many others. I hope people left bread crumbs behind...

Drake wasn't seeded too highly. They were just about right, and ran into a similar team in a great game.

So we should root for every team we play to suck?

That won't help our RPI much, will it.

There's teams I like, teams I don't. I pulled for Drake aside from our game because it was a great story and I have the upmost respect for Dr Tom & family.

If people don't like the fact that Drake got some much deserved attention - that's their problem.

Yeah, our loss to Hampton seems bigger in retrospect, because no one had any idea we would go into a free-fall to the bottom of the conference the very next year. Everyone talks about LE's Big XII title teams, but remember the following two seasons. They were horrible. Larry's inability to recuit talent, after substantial success, was alarming.
I have a hunch Keno can keep it going...

I'll go ahead and cheer for Iowa in the tournament. I have trouble begrudging people success when they earn it.
Then you also cheer for Iowa in bowl games? I'd wager that cheering for Iowa in anything is atypical of Iowa State fans, especially ones I know.

Unreal. What a crappy way to lose. That was a one in a hundred shot. Fading away, 35 footer with two guys in your face.

What game were you watching? The three point line is 19-9 and the guy took his shot from maybe 5 feet behind the line. I would say it was about a 25 footer. He was able to set and step into the shot and shoot it over two, apparently, shorter defenders. The announcer said he was a 38% three point shooter if I heard correctly. At any rate...certainly not a "one in a hundred shot".

If we could just collectively gather our hate and direct it toward a team that is deserving of such - we could be far more effective. We could take over their minds!

I nominate the Kansas State Wildcats as such a team.

Drake was probably seeded a spot or two too high, and WKU a spot or two too low. Would have made more sense as a 6-11.

You are right that it sounds hypocritical, but there has always been bad blood between ISU and Iowa. The other two have done their own thing. I cheer on the other two not because I feel like ISU is superior or the MVC is a little brother conference. I cheer them on because I like them, I support Iowa teams in general. I support local and statewide highschool teams as well. I dont expect everyone to have this same philosophy, but some of you need to cut us that do some slack. Drake had a really good season and I really wanted them to succeed. I like when Iowa is put on the map for something positive. Im proud of my state and the people in it. I am a die hard Cyclone fan and they will always take front seat to anyone.
