I'm building a house in northern Ames and putting in a bar. I have a bar wall built but looking to find someone who can build me a restaurant style wooden bar top. Does anyone have any recommendations for contractors or guys who may do this on the side in the Des Moines, Ames, central Iowa area? Thanks.

For the right price I can probably point you in the right direction. PM me with how much you're looking to spend and I'll see if my guy would be interested. He does fantastic wood work and will have plenty of references to provide you with. He does wood work for all the local radio stations for their state fair setups, I've seen some fantastic cabinet work of his and some awesome bars as well.

Screw down a 3/4 plywood cut to the size you wish. Glue another 3/4 wood veneer on top, put a wooden counter edging or bar rail around the edge. Stain it, and put down a coating of bar resin on it. You could probably do it for $200 or less depending on size and finish.

I've never used bar resin, so I'm not sure what level of difficulty it would be. My educated guess is fairly easy, if it's anything like poly.

Check out JMK Carpentry on facebook. If you don't use facebook you can still Google their facebook page. They are out of Norwalk, but would probably come up. They have many examples of their work on the Facebook page, as well as contact information. My sister has had work done by them and it turned out fantastic.

As far as local guys go, I would recommend Chad Toth or Jeff Manzer, but they are both probably super busy. I know JMK is looking to take on some work though.

This is probably one of the easiest projects you could do, to do it yourself. It's basically a nice piece of finish plywood and a bar rail moulding. You could probably have it together in an afternoon and finished in a weekend.
