US Capitol & US Harvest, both unremarkable (one was a gift). Is your MoFi DSOTM semi-translucent?

No, it's black vinyl with a white/black center label. It's this one:

I had no idea there were so many vinyl fans in here. I've kept my old vinyl from 60's thru 80's. Am now gradually upgrading to 180 or 200 gram recordings where possible. Other favorites I've been trying to locate mint or near mint copies.

I've also been upgrading my equipment as well, albeit slowly. Wanting next to go to a tube pre-amp.

Here's a couple of my favorite vinyl web sites for those who haven't run across them:

Great 180-200 gm vinyl source:

Vinyl Records | Vinyl Record Albums | Vinyl LP Records - SoundStage Direct

Equipment:

Needle Doctor

SoundStage is a good one for new pressings. For used, I'll occasionally buy on ebay, but mostly use Discogs; that site is nice because it's organized by catalog number so you know exactly which pressing you're getting without having to ask the seller for photos of the catalog id/matrix numbers/deadwax markings/etc.

My favorite vinyl album is Discovery by the Electric Light Orchestra. (That will drop my mind back 30 years). Howver, I do admit that when I am done listening to ELO, I put on some Rammstein. Those ELO tunes will stay way too long bouncing around in my head, if I give them a chance.

Thread bump. I stumbled across a pretty interesting collection this week. It's a 48 LP set complete with cue notes called History of Rock: Album Greats. It's a massive collection of basically every major rock artist and band from 1960 - 1979. It's still in the box addressed the the station manager at KRNQ in Des Moines. I did a little research and it turns out that the entire collection was played in some US markets over Labor Day weekend in 1979. I've played a couple and they don't look or sound like they've been spun more than once or twice. I'm debating now whether to keep it for myself or give it to my parents for Christmas. I like the music but that was their era.

I think my most prized possession on vinyl is the original mono version of Jefferson Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow. It's not in mint condition but it still sounds really good. Just an great album.

This is an awesome thread. Got a quick question.

Thinking about getting a record player and getting some of my favorite Zeppelin, Floyd and Stones stuff on vinyl. Is there any places in Des Moines or West Des Moines or other burbs to buy records?

I don't collect and I don't even have a record player, but I have original copies of Help! and the White Album of the Beatles that I display for decoration.

Take a road trip to Burlington and check out Weird Harold's.

Probably a little late in the day to get there for Vinyl Sunday, though.

I collect the much more obscure laserdiscs as my avatar suggests, it's actually analog sound read through a digital laser and the sound quality is incredible and unique. Lots of great and some exclusive music video and concert footage released in the 80s and 90s.

Yeah not going to be able to make that road trip today. I did check out Half Price Books in Clive at the recommendation of a few friends. Not a bad vinyl collection. Within the first few minutes of looking found a packaged copy of Houses of the Holy (in the top three of my favorite albums) so I jumped on that. Also picked up a Miami Vice soundtrack for $2.99 (got some decent songs on it) so altogether spent about $27.00.

Picked up a $15.00 coupon off orders $50 or more on Black Friday. Will go back to get their copy of Zeppelin IV Friday if its still there.

Now I got to find a turntable. Looking to get a great Black Friday deal on one this week.

Visiting family in Des Moines this summer, I went to Wayback Records on 6th Ave.. Not bad. Not too big and I thought his prices were a little high, but he had a good collection. Also worth the visit if you're into rock memorabilia, as the walls are covered.

Half-Priced Books used to be a good place to explore for cheap, used vinyl, but they must be catching up on the demand picking up because the prices keep rising. Other than that Ebay works sometimes, if you have a seller you can trust, as it's obviously impossible to judge vinyl quality accurately on-line.

One other option if you have time is to watch Craigslist for private sales. People have yard/estate sales and roll out old album collections and really have no idea what they're selling and generally just stick a $1 sticker on the album.

Craigslist is good for equipment also if you're trying to put a retro 2 channel system together. Just make sure you test everything fully; old components can crack, solder joints fail, and speaker foam disintegrate.

Have fun.

Vinyl has the best sound. Pink Floyd The Wall or strangely, Frampton Comes Alive. I used to remember going to a record store in West Des Moines, Music Factory, I believe, and looking throught the albums. Those were great times. You could ask the clerks and they knew all of the new music or could recommend something for you. Not like going to buy a CD now. A lot of those places always had a back room where you could buy your 'smoking devices'. And you cna't clean the hippie lettuce on a CD case.

Geez, man! Sometimes when you're in the car and the only thing you have to use is a CD case, you gotta make it work!

Record stores are harder to find nowadays. The atmosphere is always excellent in a record store. Makes me remember when I was younger, this record store I used to visit weekly. They always had some great tunes playing and incense lit. Good times, good times.

ZZZ Records on Ingersoll, just west of 19th/MLK. There's also a collector's show coming up on Sunday, December 7th at the Holiday Inn off 6th Street near the Mercy Hospital. Should be around 20-30 regional dealers there with some neat stuff. Costs a couple bucks to get in.

What I've got coming - Led Zeppelin III, The Doors self-titled debut album, Beatles Greatest hits 1967-70, KISS Destroyer

What I'd still like to get - Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Hotel California, Back in Black, Hard Day's Night soundtrack

Awesome thread.

I have more 45's than albums. Not sure of the exact count. (I've been horrible about organizing them, and don't have them near me at the moment).

Bummer that few would qualify as even near-Mint. That's what happens when people actually "play the records."

A few I'm glad I own, regardless of condition:
  • Yesterday b/w Act Naturally, The Beatles (Capital -- orange/yellow swirl label)
  • Let it Be b/w You Know My Name (Look Up the Number), The Beatles (Apple)
  • Suspicious Minds (not sure of B-side), Elvis Presley
Also have "classic" late-'60s bubblegum singles, including "Sugar, Sugar" and "Chewy Chewy" (both on Buddah Records) and two Monkees singles: "Daydream Believer"/"Goin' Down" and "Valeri"/"Tapioca Tundra."
(This is what happens when you have "older sisters")

I own a 7-inch EP from who-knows what year, guessing early-60s, inherited from my parents, includes "Big Bad John" and "Runaround Sue" (I think it has 4 songs total).

We play our vinyl collection frequently and much of it is near mint. Having the kids grown up helps greatly. A good disc washer and protective sleeves help maintain. Sleeves are pretty cheap if you're not using them.

For those that are scratched and worn, we're enjoying up-grading our old favorites to 180 and 200 gram over time.

Enjoy.
