Ok, so should read Uthoff/Ol. Now, what are your predictions on the match ups?

BDJ on Uthoff and Hogue on White.

I think Naz will be on Clemmons a lot, and will be the designated double for the post.

I'm nervous about this one. Lots of Iowa boys on the Hok team. Look at what an inferior UNI team almost did to us last year at The Well. Seems like the Iowans really get up for the in-state rivalry. So, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Jok, Gessell (essentially an Iowan), Woody, and even Oglesby make significant contributions against us. As others have said, if we can have a decent night shooting & keep fairly even on rebounds, I think we will win - otherwise, it could be another Maryland game.

Take this all with a grain of salt, as I am a hockey mind trying to predict basketball games....

Iowa has only let one opponent score over 70 points, that was Texas with 71 points.

Iowa State has only scored under 80 once, loss to Maryland.

I think 75 is the magic number for this game. Iowa is going to want a low scoring game to win. If Iowa State can score more than 75, game over. If they are off on shooting, Iowa has a chance to hang.

I'm guessing 83 - 79, Iowa State wins.

Have you guys actually watched Iowa? They don't have a half-court offense. It just doesn't exist. Google "Iowa half-court offense" and your computer will crash.

Lol they have gone from "We run and gun, exciting basketball, at least its not Lickball" to "we're going to slow it down and grind out wins".

seems reasonable; they look scrappy on fighting for rebounds and seem to come up with the tip arounds. We need to block out well on both White and Uthoff and use a lot of energy on D, which means maybe not a lot of O from Hogue, and possibly BDJ

.
good point. TX played really poor in 1H, but poured it on the 2nd. We need to score >~70s, which means we need to hit our Treys.

This isn't just about Iowa to Fred, this is about proving that we can win on the road all season. He'll have the guys read, step 1 starts on Friday.

We're better at 4 of the 5 positions than Iowa, have a better coach and a better bench. This is the type of game Fred needs to win so the team can start expecting to beat lesser teams on the road

I tried to put together a good post, but I honestly have only watched about 10 minutes of Iowa basketball this year, and that 10 minutes was an atrocious 10 in the second half against UNC. From the limited viewing, here is what I feel like I saw:

- Our guards (Monte, Naz, Thomas) are better than theirs (Gessel, Clemmons, Dickerson, Ogelsby)
- BDJ is awesome, and has been incredibly so lately. Uthoff is pretty damn good too, and will be the best player BDJ will have had to guard this year
- Their bigs (White, Olesani, SHHHH!) are awful offensive players, but they are very tall and play pretty big (Woodbury looks like a T-Rex out there, but he's still 7'1"). Hogue, Niang, Nader, Edozie are going to struggle on the glass

Ball movent and transition will be key.

This post went south quickly when you said Uthoff is the best player BDJ will guard all year. Are you kidding? We haven't even got to the conferences games yet where we will face Texas and Kansas but are you forgetting about RJ Hunter already? Uthoff isn't anywhere near Hunter and the Texas/Kansas guys.

They aren't that slow, they're still in the top 10% nation wide in offensive pace, they just aren't playing as fast as they were last year when they were 4th in the nation in offensive possession length.

This game should help us get used to the type of environments we'll see at places like Texas Tech and TCU.

This game will be more competitive than it should be because with all the **** our board has thrown at White he will be motivated to come out and have another 25 point game of his life!

My prediction, who ever loses will complain about the refs!

We should win this game if we plan on winning very many road games year. Just as well get used to it now, and a good close game in a hostile place will help us when the games are more important than this one.

It's never this easy though. This isn't a bunch of 1-on-1 games, like Monte vs Clemmons and Niang vs Woody.

On any given day, I would agree that I would take 4 of our guys over their corresponding starters, but match ups play a role.

You also have to consider how players shoot, rebounding intensity, defensive intensity, etc. Those factors are also heavily influenced by home/away court and just vary from night to night.

Kane for instance scored 5 points last year. Let me repeat that. KANE SCORED ONLY FIVE points last year, which sounds almost unbelievable, but it happened. (haha 2 of those were off of Woody's *ss on the inbounds play). He was playing the point against Gessel who scored 11, but couldn't score when it counted.

Also, as an aside, our short bench, outscored their derpth 19 vs 18.
