Well, time to double the view count on one of my favorite YouTube videos.

That's the best video I've ever seen.

Also, I think if Tinsley played for Hoiberg his numbers would be much more impressive

I hope some people realize that Morris just turned 19 this summer and is almost the exact same age as Custer. He could have been just be a freshmen this year. Compare that with Tinsley playing in his Junior and Senior years.

Not saying he's better, or will be better. Just that you can't compare a Freshmen to a Junior.

Sorry, guys, ISU's best point guard ever was Jaycee Holloway, who didn't score much, but who directed traffic like a god.

He is TIED with the originator of Tinsley-ball for assists during a game...12 against Nebraska in '97. He had 187 assists total that season, tied with Will Blaylock in the record books.

He ranks FOURTH in career assists (592), behind Hornacek, Stinson, and Gary Thompkins. Only Tinsley is ahead of him in average APG, but not even by one, just by a fraction, and is second only to Monté Morris in assist-to-turnover ratio.

So, maybe he played before you were born, and maybe he wasn't the most glamorous Cyclone to ever wear the jersey, but he was a truly great, truly unselfish player.

Tinsley had to be a little unselfish his senior year. He won that confernce title in 2001. Nothing against Holloway, but his offensive skill set was a little bit, umm... limited, but Tinsley accounted for almost 26 points a game over his career.

Tinsley would eat all of Holloway's cookies.

Unfair comparison up to this point. Tinsley was a Jr./Sr. while at ISU and you are comparing him against a FR/SO years of Morris. Lets see what MM turns into the next couple years and then you can do a fair comparison.

Tinsley was a beast though, he put a team on his back and won the Big12 and became a 2 seed (although he lost that first game).

Tinsley right now and it isn't even close. However, this is a question that is better answered once Morris is done with his college career. By then, maybe he'll surpass Tinsley, maybe not. And to the person asking whether Tinsley is even our best point guard in ISU history, the answer is undoubtedly YES.

*cough* Fizer.

I love Fizer...and if you had a discussion about Iowa State's all-time best player both Fizer and Tinsley would be in that conversation! Morris would not be...yet. Grayer and Fizer were dominant players but in my opinion Tinsley was the best (not my favorite all-time player though...that would be for a different discussion)!

Maybe Monte gets there in another year but its Tinsley and its not close. Tinsley could and did took over games and put this team on his back. Monte is a great distributor but needs to really work on his shot to be dominant.

I'm going to let Morris finish more than a year and a quarter of his career before I make a judgment.

Yup. And, let's not forget about Hornacek or Thompson. Jeff had a much better career in the NBA than Tinsley and was a better shot.

Gary was an All-American and beat out Chamberlain for POTY. Played pick games at noon in state gym with him in the 80's and, even at that age, he was as good as any player on the court (which included people who played college ball). Definitely the smartest player there, great passer, hit the open shot, and you could not get an offensive rebound if he was guarding you. I can only imagine how good he was in his prime.

Pick a player: TO/G = Turnovers/game SPG = Steals per game

A 3.3 RPG 10.7 PPG 5.4 APG 2.3 TO/G 1.7 SPG
B 2.9 RPG 7.6 PPG 7.6 APG .8 TO/G 1.4 SPG
C 4.5 RPG 12.5 PPG 6.3 APG 4.1 TO/G 2.6 SPG

Monte is B but he averages 4.1 APG for his career, not 7.6. That makes a HUGE difference.

Again, a career (45 games...) stat line of 7.6 PPG, 4.1 APG, 2.9 RPG is solid but its not even close to being in the discussion of anything "best all time".

Two different guys at two different points in their careers with 2 slightly different types of games. Morris isnt as flashy, just consistent and efficient. He isnt nearly as flashy as Tinsley with the highlight plays, which leads to his lack of TOs. I think if Monte stays 4 yrs he could be thought of as one of ISUs best players of all time, and if he continues to develop year to year like he has, an all-time CBB PG. Once George and Naz or gone, this is his team. He is really starting to be more aggressive on offense this year and if that continues he will be unstoppable. He will need a little more bulk for the NBA since he isn't isnt the tallest guy, so hopefully that can keep him here all 4 yrs. Morris needs his highlight "moments" to really cement his legacy but I think he'll surpass Tinsley in my eyes one day.

Agree with many here. Monte is a great PG this year, but not sure he even cracks the top 5 all time yet at ISU. I would say Tinsley and Thompson were the best, as they both had a shared affinity for slaying the Jayhawks and were First Team All-Americans.

Hornacek is probably the leader of the next tier, then it starts to get muddled.

Way up there
MM will have won more tourney games than anyone at ISU, I still think we have only just started to see how good he can be. After only a year a half its too early to compare him to the greats but in 2 years, this will be a no brainer IMO

I think Morris would try to beat Hampton by more than 1 point.
This. Tinsley had amazing skills, was fun to watch, and was our PG during arguably the best 2-year stretch of Cyclone Basketball ever. But, he was also a bit of a head case, left the team "for personal reasons" late in his Sr year, lost to Baylor in the conference tournament, and then to "the team that won't be mentioned" as a 2-seed. Morris is presiding over what could be a better, longer age of Cyclone basketball. But we'll see. And ... Don't forget Hornacek.
