Matt Blair - seen this man hit the qb from Oklahoma on an option play so hard that they had to help him off the field and he wasn't walking, but staggering.

Brother Bob, I think that hit was on Arkansas running back Dickie Morris. What a hit!!

The hit on the OU quarterback might have been Tom Perticone on Thomas Lott.

I saw that big hit on the 1977 Cyclone football highlights. It will air again on Cyclones.tv Mediacom today at 2:30. There is a lot of classic ISU football on Cyclones/tv Mediacom over the next few days.

Those 1978 throwback uniforms were cool. ISU went to the Hall of Fame Bowl in 1978.

I was a freshman in '78 and some friends were going to the Hall of Fame Bowl and I really wanted to go. Since ISU had been to 3 straight bowls at that point, and I was sure they would be in the Orange Bowl soon (we even threw oranges onto the field in those days), I decided to wait for the next one. Well for me that ended up being 33 years later at the Pinstripe Bowl. Guess I should have gone in '78!

A replay of the 1978 Hall of Fame Bowl game between Iowa State and Texas A&M will be aired on Cyclone.tv Mediacom tomorrow night at 9:00 and also this Saturday at 3:00.

I don't believe ISU has ever been to three straight bowl games. 1977 AND 1978, but no 1976 and no 1979.

CyKosiys- You are right. Even tough they went 8-3 in 1976, they didn't go to a bowl. Sure didn't think it would take so many years to get back to another though.

ISU had a number of players ineligible for the '78 HoF bowl, as I recall, due to poor grades. In those years, we were on the quarter system, so the bowl would necessarily occur after the quarter ended. I always thought the "egg on the face" due to that disadvantage regarding this game was a catalyst to make the change to semesters, which I think occurred as of fall 1980.

8-3 and no bowl bid? Damn, was Bruce VandeVelde the AD back then?

Not nearly as many bowls back then. You actually had to be good to get in one. For some crazy reason, I thought we would be good for the foreseeable future. That didn't work out so well.

Only losses that year were: #3 Oklahoma, Colorado ('Clones rarely win there) and #16 Oklahoma State. The Cyclones beat #7 Missouri and #9 Nebraska. Saw every game that year--- home and away. Special football. I miss it.
