MLB: Fantasy Baseball Draft Strategies

Hey guys. Just wondering if any of you have any specific strategies for your Fantasy drafts.

Some guys like drafting pitchers early, some prefer to wait and get volumes starters. Some guys try to get a few of the top closers so make sure they win Saves and such.


Last year I grabbed Cano and Tulowitzki early and that worked out great. But in the 11 spot of a 16 team league I'm not sure if that will work out this year.

I'm thinking about balancing Infielders with outfielders early and waiting on pitching.

What are some strategies that you guys like?

Last year I drafted 3-4 closers.

All lost their closing duties within the first 2 months of the season starting.

Yeah I ended up with one good closer last year and one guy who lost his job a little ways in. The rest I pieced together throughout the year.

I also had one or two starters who I started every time out and moved a few other pieces around.

Actually, I don't go in with a strategy, I generally avoid pitchers early but if one falls lower than I think they should I'll take them. I either draft a ton of closers or relievers or almost none depending on what categories are in play and how fast the good starting pitchers get taken.

I generally target players with good track records coming off down years. Sometimes it works out and I get a good player cheap, and sometimes it doesn't and I waive them before Memorial Day.

Tulo will be an interesting fantasy player this year. If he's healthy, he's a top 5 player but he's never healthy. I wouldn't touch him at pick 5 but at pick 15 where I'm at now I'd probably take him.

Yeah this gets tough, especially in a big league, where you could end up with 3 OF, but no 2B or SS.

Strategy often goes out the window a couple picks into the draft. So what you say here doesn't mean ****.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out with our massive league. Someone you could wait on in a 12 team league might go way earlier due to depth issues.
