To make my point clear I agree with this 100%. My beef is a reporter/some fan who doesn't give a dime telling me to chill with my expectations.

fwiw I saw yesterday coming back in February and told all my friends and they called me crazy. Yesterday doesn't sting as bad becuase of that.

I love supporting ISU and will continue to do so win or lose. Call me a sucker, I love spending Saturday's in Ames and following the basketball team.

I am cool with having expectations. And your more than entitled to have them. Not saying you are doing this I just get frustrated with that fan that rips college kids who work their butts off trying to bring fun and pride to their school.

If I didn't go to ISU, give 1000's of dollars in donations/football tickets/following and supporting the basketball team would I be content with making the tournement? Yes.

How many wins satisfies the $ amount you put into it? What round? It's sports, **** happens.

I get a kick out of this idea that the fans are somehow to blame for the expectations or how high they were. I direct you to :25 mark.

Expectations were warranted, if not outright encouraged.

Now, fwiw - the fans that attack players on social media like we saw (well I didn't see, but gathered) after the KSU game - that's despicable.

I'm surprised how big a deal has been made out of this stuff (and for the record...i do not condone going after players individually on any sort of social media)....go to any program in the country with expectations and see their fanbases reactions after disappointing losses.

There seems to be a very big deal being made this season about the 0.2% of our fanbase that act like idiots. It doesn't make it ok, but it happens just as bad, if not worse at every other respectable school in the country.

The Twitter part might (might( only be 0.2%, but the fanbase thing was every Cyclone fan I met in person, with the notable exception at times of 2 of them, one of whom is married to me, and the other carries on running jokes that have gone for years.

I gave up talking about the season, because it just wasn't worth dealing with the angry people around me while watching an outstanding season unfold.

KU fans go on and on about it on phog and I thought it was a complete fabrication. So is that angry isu fan thing accurate?

I guess that's the advantage of living in Pac 12 country; the only isu fans I know are friends and family back in Iowa and are just disappointed to a normal amount.

It's a bummer but I don't get fans that feel slighted.

Good article, sorry we have high eteam's lack of success I understand. ations. Not a season ticket holder and I still spent 1000+ dollars to watch them play 3 games this year. I think if Hines and some of these other reporters had to spend the money watching these teams (football, bball) they would understand what it feels like. (Not what so ever implying that it's ok to go after players on Twitter, that's bs.) But to understand what it's like to spend huge amounts of money following these teams and supporting ISU. Maybe then they will understand why fans get so upset when expectations are not met.

Nobody forced you to spend 1000+ dollars. The football team's lack of success I understand. But the basketball team has continually improved over Fred's 5-6 year run. I think a little bit of restraint on jumping down everyone's to blame throats can only help the team deal with an already challenging time.

Yeah, the expectations are not the problem. It's fans who have expectations that can't handle it like adults when they're not met.

After Kansas lost at West Virginia, KU fans were talking about how it was Self's worst coaching job (while they sat in first place for the 11th consecutive season, despite having the least amount of talent he's had in a long time)...it goes on everywhere that has expectations.

Did you guys see the link to the texas board after we beat them in the Big 12 tourney? That was 20 times worse than anything our fans have done.

So what you are saying is our fans level of stupidity is less so its okay? Guess I don't care if other schools have idiotic fans just want to make sure our guys are not treated poorly by some fat *** who's only "athletic" accomplishment was a 200 game in bowling

Our fanbase TOOK OVER Kansas City this year. We outnumbered a program in their own backyard that has won 11 straight conference titles. We continually show up to support a football program that has won 1 conference game the last two seasons...from the threads on here, and all the comments about our fanbase on social media you would think we had the most unsupportive, harshest group of idiots out there.

Other programs would love to have a fanbase like our's.

No, but thanks for taking what I said and completely spinning it around. My point is that we seem REALLY focused on the very, very, small amount of our fanbase that sucks.

Hines at his finest imo. This is no Randy P. **** on the wall, Hines is well connected and a CBB nut.

http://amestrib.com/sports/hines-column-ncaa-upset-will-add-expectations-next-season

On-point article, thanks for sharing. His point re: the burden of expectations this season is something I and many others have posted on this board many time. Yes, the fan base may have had unrealistic expectations, but what else do you expect when the coach and players are talking about winning the conference and national titles before the ball has even gone up in the first pre-season game? And that was after losing two All Americans to graduation, only the second time ISU has had two All Americans on the roster. It's no coincidence both teams went deep into the tournament.

Hines is right about expectations for next season due to the number of quality and experienced players returning. Hopefully, the team will have learned from this season to get up for every opponent, regardless of how they are ranked. I think the many leaders on the team will make sure that happens. (Oops, there I go raising expectation.)

Moreover, programs have different things going for them. UT and KU have plenty to sell, while one of the biggest for ISU is having more supportive fans.
