Re: Coach Matt A

Apparently even if Tuco has no clue what he's talking about he still likes to play it off like he has it all figured out. You're failing miserably today Tuco, maybe you should go on time out.

Re: Coach Matt A

Idk, I care quite a bit because of the Diallo situation. Matt has been great recruiting transfers but that was our thing before he was an assistant "recruiting" coach. I really like Matt and think he's been doing a great job, but off the top of my head I can't think of any big-time recruits that he's pulled. Especially high school. Monte and Thomas were both Otz, guys correct? Once again, I want to re-iterate, I love Matt and the passion he has for ISU and think he's been doing a great job. I just would rather not have anything negatively affect the Diallo recruitment.

Very true.

And when did Matt become the grand puba? I'm appreciative of all he's done, but my lord people....we will be just fine, and we will get another great recruiter.

Of course, the program will survive with or without Coach M. However, I think you are vastly underestimating his value to the team. His unique contribution would be almost impossible to replace.

If Matt leaves, wonder if promotion of Henry helped the decision.

Re: Coach Matt A

From the Diallo thread....thought it was worth reposting:

Here's a quote from Matt A in an interview with the Iowa State Daily prior to this year:
“Not in a million years, if someone came and offered me triple the amount of money that I’m making now, I would never think about leaving a guy like Fred Hoiberg,” Abdelmassih said, taking his foot off the desk and leaning forward in his chair.
“When you are around good people that you consider friends, that you consider family, there’s no price tag to that. Wherever Fred goes in life, whether it’s being at Iowa State for 15 years or being somewhere else, I hope I’m blessed enough that I can keep going on the journey with him.”

Re: Coach Matt A

Teams don't usually promote from within when someone is fired. They promote from within when someone leaves after being successful. If Matt A ends up as Head Coach at St Johns in the next 10 years, it's most likely the he goes to be an assistant for Mullin and Mullin is successful and leaves for another NBA job.

This is true... to an extent. Does anyone think that coach Otz is closer to getting a shot at a head coaching gig after his move to the University of Washington? They had a nice 16-15 record this year with a whopping 5 conference wins in the Pac 12. Or... would he have a better shot being known as the recruiting guru at Iowa State that has helped build a program that has gone to 4 straight NCAA Tournaments, 4 straight 20+ win seasons, a program that was ranked in the top 15 in the country virtually all season long, etc...?

I hope he goes but I think Mullen is way too sharp off a cookie to take him. It's nice everybody has all the love for this guy but honestly it will be no loss if he's gone.

Would love to see him at St Johns and bring TJ back, and anybody that thinks this guy will ever be a D1 head coach needs to put the bong down.

Yes, only for that fact that he has more varied experience now. Working in different areas of the country and for different coaches just builds more and more connections for your network. I would say TJ is now well-placed to take a low to mid major job in either the MW or the NW now, probably NorCal as well.

IF Matt A. goes, and who knows if there's anything to that or not, does TJO think about asking Fred if he can come back? If UW puts together another season like this one he might need to update his resume anyway.

Re: Coach Matt A

I don't think it would be a big loss and it would provide an opportunity to get a top notch college recruiter. Matt helped in recruiting transfers but honestly now with the track record they have the program sells itself to top transfers

MattA was willing to hit the planes back East on a non stop basis. His replacement will need to do the same.
