When I moved to Iowa I wanted to take a pic of every Courthouse. I know it's cliche but stuff like this makes Iowa cool. Tons of small town charm in this state.

Edit. I used to find small towns with big-city names and pretend if I went into witness protection I could say I'm moving to "Paris" (TX) or Rome (IA). freshman year (before modern Internet) I drove to Rome Iowa to find nothing but trailers and meth heads.

Is SE Iowa is as depressing as these photos would generally indicate? Nice photography, but some of those pics are like the start to an Eminem video.

I can confirm that there is not much in Paris, TX or Italy, TX.

You can make anywhere look depressing. New York is the seen as one of the greatest cities in the world, but take pictures of the right places and you would think it was Rome as the Visigoths were coming over the wall.

Do you think we will see the end of rural flight anytime soon?

No, even w/ the convenience of the internet people want all the amenities of the urban life. There will always be a few who live rural, but many people want everything at their fingertips. Heck there are threads on here where people complain about having to drive 20 min across DM as being too far. Not having the choice of 5 grocery stores and 10 malls is too big of sacrifice for many people.

I've driven through some of these towns and found them far less rundown than he's showing in this project. It's like he's trying to find the worst parts of some of these communities.

This. Now with a several of these unincorporated communities, and towns under 3000, they are in fact a dump where the original business building were all build in 1900 and havent had anyone occupy them for 30 years. There is no money in those communities and the outskirts of many of these have city commuters living there because the property cost is lower. These are also his bread and butter and taking pictures of these places under cloudy grey skies is artsy. His site is about old buildings and Main Street had been on a downward spiral across Iowa until about 10 years ago.
I don't think he is trying to represent Iowa poorly, just taking pictures of old buildings.
Look at the Mount Pleasant pictures. That is more like what Main Street Iowa looks like now a day (except in Keokuk apparently, yeeesh). It's the old brick "block" buildings where the top floors are often just empty/storage, but street level is full of businesses because there has been an emphasis on this in many towns. Look at Cedar Fall's Main Street as an example of what everyone else is trying to accomplish (often with far fewer resources and weaker fundraisers at the helm).

If he took photos of the nicest place in town, this wouldn't have the same effect.

I guess I didn't read up on what his mission is. I suppose with the "forgotten Iowa" tag he's trying to highlight what's been left behind/abandoned.

Edit: I just read his article, and he says he wants to show things as they "really" are.

Just showing the bad isn't doing that. It's showing one side. If you want to show things as they really are, you show the good too.

I like how he has the towns listed on the right so you don' t have to hunt for one you're looking for.
