It's time to boot Fort Dodge, Ottumwa, and Mason City (And possibly Marshalltown) from DSM Metro affiliation in all sports boys and girls. DCG, Norwalk, and a split Waukee will be able to fill those spots soon enough.

Why all the hate for the outliers? Where else would they go?

It's especially odd to me because I'm pretty sure they share quite a few athletic programs with Mount Ayr already. Why not just get it over with and combine the schools?

I think this dates back and basically comes down to the town won't let it happen. I believe there have been multiple attempts to get Diagonal in Mt. Ayr. Stupid pride is costing them money. Think of the redundancies that are unnecessary.

There are a lot of little schools dotted across Iowa that should be closed and moved to the next town over.

I would have never guessed that Johnston is so much larger than Urbandale. How does that happen when Johnston has under half the population?

It would be nice to see % increase for each school.

Because there are a lot of kids that go to Johnston that live in Des Moines, Urbandale, and Grimes. Across the street from Hoover North of Aurora is Johnston school district. To drive to the new Johnston high school from there will take about 25 minutes in rush hour traffic. You could also easily walk from there to Urbandale. Driving to North and Roosevelt would also be quicker.

When I graduated from Ottumwa in 2006 I graduated with 399 kids, and every class below mine was the same size so there were roughly 1500 kids in the school at that time. You can obviously tell that they were much more competitive back then in sports, now they are a laugh at best. When will they force Valley to build a 2nd high school? Its getting a bit out of hand.

WDM Side of Waukee
Waukee split is at least three years away at this point.
The school boundary for Waukee is Dallas County in the metro, so anything west of 60th Street in WDM is Waukee and west of 142nd St north into Clive and Urbandale is Waukee. The preliminary plan is for the high schools to split in the 2021-2022 school year.

Iowa City also adds a third public school starting in 2016-17, Iowa City Liberty will also likely be a 4A school.

Yeah, IC West is routinely turning kids away right now because they're already over-capacity.

I thought they weren't planning on breaking ground on the new school until like 2020? Maybe that's when they were thinking a new school would be finished and ready for students, but I would guess it's probably more like at least 5 years before the split happens.

The CIML isn't expecting Waukee 2 until the 2021-22 school year.

It's not any worse today than it's been for the past decade. Valley isn't really growing anymore, which I thought was also part of the reason they didn't split in the first place (although I know that wasn't the biggest reason). Waukee and Ankeny are/were already almost as big as Valley, but they were still nowhere near done growing, so the cities decided to split them.

Valley isn't splitting anytime in the foreseeable future.

Valley never let the residents vote and the school board made the decision back in the late 1990's. Now the WDM schools district has spent over 120 million (or more) in renovations to Valley - Crazy!!!! Valley Southwoods could have become a 2nd HS. Parents now wonder why their kids don't play and quit.
In some sports - VHS could beat 90% of other schools with kids that don't play sports. Sad! One year the top intermural team beat the varsity in a pick up game of basketball. Its crazy they don't win more state championships.

The original plan was for the 2nd high school to open in 2018. My oldest child would have been the first class to spend all three years in the building. However it has been pushed back.

I am well aware of the boundaries since I've had several friends whose kids were impacted by boundary changes over the past several years, lucky for me the changes in 2016 will impact the north side of the district and I'm on the south side.

Why does the list only count enrollment from grades 9-11? Is it to determine the number of next years Soph-Senior classes?

The Diagonal kids attend Mount Ayr schools in the morning. They come back to Diagonal in the afternoon for PE and a couple other subjects.

For a dollar amount of $30 million dollars, there has to be a vote the school board cannot just approve it.

Why all the hate for the outliers? Where else would they go?

They can go outly with each other or MC can go to Waterloo (actually closer), FD can go to Sioux City (like 10 more miles), Ottumwa who cares they can do whatever Newton is doing.

Draw a 50 mile radius around the city (Maybe keep Marshalltown even though they are just outside of the 50 mile radius) of DSM and that's the limit. The metro is big enough now that these other schools aren't needed and everyone is just wasting time and money unnecessarily.
