Re: REPORT: Alvin Gentry, not Fred Hoiberg, favorite to replace Tom Thibodeau

I REALLY hope I'm wrong but I have a buddy with fairly good connections throughout both basketball programs and he's heard Fred to the Bulls is all but official. Apparently he told the ISU players his intentions to leave last week. TJ was brought in on purpose: to be the interim head coach for one year.

I want to be wrong here because I want CFH to be here forever but if my buddy is saying this I have to believe him because he has no reason to lie to me and he loves ISU basketball just as much as me.

Of course he prefaced everything he told me by saying this is what is the situation right now but as we all know people can change their minds in an instant.

He went in to further detail but I can either explain or not once the news is official. If I give too much detail and then I'm wrong I would really dig my own grave.

The players haven't had any meeting with the coach.

Why the hell would we have a 1 year interim coach with a top 10 team?
not to mention keeping it all together after telling the team a week before it is announced. Potentially weeks had the Bulls kept winning. Doesn't hold water.

I've had multiple people message me that they're hearing what I'm hearing so I'm not just making stuff up. My hope is the situation changes away from what we're all hearing right now.

Yeah, if all the players knew he was leaving, I feel like multiple things would have leaked by now.

Possibly.

At the same time, Fred was hired roughly 5 years and 2 weeks ago.

right and part of the reason that worked was because he wasn't currently coaching.

Gentry would be the typical, well the last guy we had was a defensive coach time to hire an offensive coach move. Really good assistant but seems more suited for that role than the head man.

Considering last week the Bulls were up 2 games to 1 and looking like the team to beat in that series no it doesnt' hold water.

Plus if he told the team "his intentions" to make a move to the Bulls "last week" than that gave Jamie a head start in finding his replacement...

Sorry, but I'm skeptical. So what else has your buddy told you in the past that has proven to be true? A few posters on CF have proven track records with inside info, but I don't recall you doing it before.

There are some details in your post that seems questionable, such as Hoiberg telling the players a week ago that he was leaving. No way that stays confidential.

It is also hard to believe that your buddy knows this info, tells you, and you post on CF . . . but no one else who is watching the story 24/7 knows this info.

Jeremy and Chris have only said that it is a possibility being considered, but that they don't know what Hoiberg is going to do.

Hmmmm.. who did he replace?

Didn't realize Gmac had been gone for months before we lucked out with Fred.

The part that makes this 'inside information' marginal at best is the part about telling the players his intention to leave last week. Very unlikely for two reasons: first, the Bulls were still very much alive and playing well in the playoffs last week and second, if he had told the players this it would be have gotten around a lot more, a group of college age guys are not going to keep that completely to themselves.

Wrong AGAIN!!

not really. A recruiting genius that will likely be our head coach---and it is out there already apparently--should be able to sign up that Michigan kid. And others. Throwing a bunch of offers out there is great but not exactly landing them yet.

I hope Hoiberg ends up staying at ISU but the situation right now is not looking good for ISU. I hope that changes.

On the other hand, maybe Pollard also knows that the decision has been made and that is why he was so forward with his comments. Maybe? Nah.

So no one wants to read what I'm hearing from someone who I consider knowledgable? Okay, I'll stop posting then.

Thanks for manning up an posting that. Good stuff. I really wish we fostered an atmosphere where posters felt safe posting these types of things.

Definitely doesn't hold water IMO. At least some of it. I have a hard time believing Fred would have told anyone anything. It is way too soon IMO. The Thibs situation will likely take some time to work itself out. Thats not me saying it, that's Chicago media. No way anything is final enough for Fred to be telling anyone anything outside his inner circle IMO.

Not attacking you Dandy. Just sounds like bad info to me.

Thanks man. Appreciate it.

If I'm wrong you guys and crucify me all you want. I just want to get the content I'm hearing out there for you all to see. If I'm wrong then so be it. I have no reason to believe my friend is lying to me.

Hey, nothing personal, but it is hard to take seriously "inside" information that doesn't pass the common sense test.

So, back to my initial question. What else in the past has your buddy gotten as "inside" information that would strengthen his credibility? Anything that you have posted?

When I see a track record, like CW's and a few other CF posters, I tend to trust what they say. In situations without a track record, I tend to trust my common sense.
