Re: REPORT: Alvin Gentry, not Fred Hoiberg, favorite to replace Tom Thibodeau

If this is accurate he better take JP with him. What kind of AD worth anything can't keep a local legend in town. Who can we expect him to get worth a crap if he can't get Fred.

No final four. No elite eight. No outright big XII title. No wins at KU. Leaves a lot of unfinished business. 5 years. Some players are here that long. Appreciate all he has done but I think if he leaves he clearly didn't live up to his potential as a college coach.

Re: REPORT: Alvin Gentry, not Fred Hoiberg, favorite to replace Tom Thibodeau

Where is the love for ISU if he leave when we are coming in to a season with our highest preseason rank ever. Where is the love when he is personally hindering our ability to improve our roster. If he really loved ISU he would accomplish something here first when the roster is set up to do so.

I get that Fred is an NBA guy, but these jobs open all of the time. 42 coaches have been fired in the last 5 years, only 3 have been in same spot for 5 years.

I agree. Fred will have NUMEROUS opportunities to go to the NBA. It's not like this will be his only chance. The average lifespan of an NBA head coach is less than 5 years. Numerous guys get fired every year.

I could maybe see it if Fred thought this would be his only shot, but that's not the case at all.

Me being a lifelong Cyclone fan, I couldn't see myself ever wanting to leave ISU if I had a job there. It would be my dream job. But for Fred, maybe the NBA means more to him than ISU? It sure wouldn't for me, but if it is for him then so be it. But then don't tell us that ISU means everything to you on your way out if that's the case. Just tell us that the NBA means everything to you, and that ISU is a close second. Tell us the truth.

Another 15 hours of jsb meltdown is officially underway.

Well, I will post in a thread about Iowa State basketball that Iowa State basketball is getting screwed over. Fred Hoiberg leaving is not good for Iowa State basketball. How many fire Rhoads posts do we have on this site? A ton. Wanting to fire a coach is one huge meltdown, but those threads go on for days.

If you want to call that a meltdown go ahead.

You could go start a 'Fred Hoiberg is coaching the Bulls' thread and comment how great of news that is for Iowa State fans.

Is it too early for a"would you take Fred back?" Thread?

i thought it was interesting that in a few of the reports that came out that there were things like "if it doesn't work out he'll have his pick of college jobs" like he would have no problem coaching at another school.

im learning through this process that I truly am an ISU supporter. It's kind of like being an Arsenal supporter really. It's the institution that I love, not the individuals.

And you didn't. It's not Gibbons.

I still say it is, but what does it matter?

He could go down as the best basketball coach in Cyclone history, and a Cyclone icon.... but if he leaves now, I'd still probably rank him behind Johnny, Larry, and Floyd. Larry and Floyd accomplished more, and Johnny stayed here a LOT longer and loved ISU enough to never leave for someplace else.... that means something.

Like I said earlier, I think he could easily come back to college if he wanted to. But I don't think he will fail in the NBA. It will be just our luck that he win a title. Barf.

But I think if he comes back it won't be to Ames. He'll go to Duke or Michigan State which will have openings about the time he would be leaving the NBA if he would fail.

Re: REPORT: Alvin Gentry, not Fred Hoiberg, favorite to replace Tom Thibodeau

Now we know you're delusional.

Why do you think that.

He said repeatedly he wanted to win a national title. I think part of the reason he's leaving Iowa State now is he knows it can't be done here---so why waste another 5 years before doing what he really wants to be doing?

He will be much more likely to win one at a school that can actually win a title. And let's not kid ourselves the Iowa State program is not going to be better off whenever he would decide to come back then it is today (and he's leaving it today).

But I don't think he'll come back to coach at any college.

People are delusional if they think he'd ever come back here to coach.

Do you not remember how bad Iowa St basketball was during the GMAC era?

What Fred did was very similar to what Johnny did, except an extra year to the tournament. Floyd started with Johnny's players and Larry started with Floyd's players, then the wheels came off. Their highs were higher, but they also had talent in place for them.

Let's just hope the next coach uses the talent he'll inherit to take this program to new highs. And then hope he doesn't leave to Bulls or have a drinking problem....

Feels like JP is just giving up after the heart attack. Why not float out there that they are trying to put together a package to keep Fred as long as they can. Even, just to give the illusion that he is trying.
