Re: REPORT: Alvin Gentry, not Fred Hoiberg, favorite to replace Tom Thibodeau

Haha yep and all the players, and staff, and media know but aren't saying anything out of respect for Fred. And none of the national or Chicago media guys know despite the Bulls front office being notorious for leaks. That's totally believable.

Why would the Bulls leak out that Hoiberg is their top choice and the job is 1000% his if he wants it to give it to someone else?

That's what I'm afraid of. The Bulls take a hard PR hit if they can't lure Fred away. The Bulls GM is taking a big risk if he doesn't have a confirmation in place.

Another thought is that maybe if Fred says no, would they drop Paxon and keep Thibs?

And the Bulls job isn't a good one, Fred will be expected to fix the offense of a team that's built to win with defense. He'll get almost no slack and without major roster moves won't be able to compete against Lebron. Thibs's tenure in chi town can be summed up with two words, injuries and Lebron. In all honesty they aren't far from falling into rebuild mode, in the NBA coaches don't survive rebuilds. There are jobs with less talented rosters that would suit Fred much better.

The other thing to fermenter is the difficulty that they've had signing any marquee free agents. They got a Gasol this past off season, but he's past his prime. Other than that, the last "name" guy they got was boozer and they had to over pay him.

Something is not right there when that market can't get name free agents to go there.

Which is why they haven't publicly come out and said it is 100% Fred's job. Unless I missed something the only people throwing out statements like that are press members who have "sources".

What? I think Fred is the Bulls top candidate and the job is his if he wants it, but that Fred hasn't decided yet. The Bulls leak everything, good or bad.

I don't think the Bulls leak "Hoiberg is the only real candidate, the job is 1000% his, etc" if they don't think he is joining them. They'd need to hire a new PR person otherwise

Again, they are notorious for leaking everything. To the point that it has ruined trades because other teams have gotten ****** that the details of their trade talks got out. This isn't a PR thing.

The Bulls are absolutely horrible when it comes to PR. Just about every minor and major rumor gets "leaked" out of that organization.

Take a look at who favorited that post.
I'll take Cloned's direct Hoiberg family contact over CW's and Hines contact with the MBB staff any day.

http://grantland.com/the-triangle/a-eulogy-for-if-only-the-bulls-as-we-know-them-are-probably-done/

Just a good description of the Bulls' roster and salary cap situation:

They're old
They're injured
Not many "Hoiball" players
Great defense but little offensive talent outside of Jimmy Butler
No real trade or draft capital
DRose is a shell of himself
No cap flexibility this year
Everybody will have cap next year
No real shooters
Lebron and Kyrie are going to be there to torture you every year
Other East teams (Milwaukee, Washington if KD comes) are getting better in a rapid fashion

Fred knows all this. This was a team built to win three years ago. This is a Floyd situation, Fred. You'd be taking over a declining empire. Not a budding one. Think about it. If you're going to go, pick a loaded young team (Minnesota) or a win now team (Cleveland) or somebody committed to a long-term rebuild with you at the helm (Stevens in Boston).

A not quite good enough and about to decline team isn't what you want.

Well it happens every year where teams don't get their first leaked option, so why would this one be any different?

@sigmapolis. Timberwolves will always suck. Wiggins is gone once his contract is up.

The Bulls organization is awful. Jerry reinsdorf is the problem. The team is owned by some very old men who, for reasons unknown gave Jerry a small piece of the pie long ago with full control of the organization. Rumor is they have all passed away or are a few years away from doing so and would like to sell. But jerry has final say and won't because he and his family stand to make more money running the org than selling. He has never been able to keep a stable organization. Think of the end of the Jordan/Jackson era.

Historically they hey have a very bad rep for treating players poorly during and after careers. In my mind Fred would be a lot better off at a different team. Plus I am not sure Paxton and Gar know what they are doing considering they have a top 5 coach and they are running him out of town. this is like the girl that cheats on her BF with you sure it is great when it is just sex but then she tells you she dumped him and wants to date you. And then you realize **** she is going to do the same thing to me. Fred best be careful what he wishes for. Whatever he decides I will root for him. Just hope it is at ISU.

If they could get a coach like Fred, their chances would increase by a lot I would think.

Oh I don't disagree with you there on the history of the franchise. Wiggins could very well just go to Toronto with his first contract or pull a Love and demand a trade. The Timberwolves are a tire fire. At least they have some young talent, though. Can't say that about the team in Illinois.

Chicago isn't much better, though, outside of the Jordan, Jackson, and Pippen years. They're awful since they ran Phil out of town. You know, for the teams that Fred played on that always won <30 games and got Floyd fired in a few years.

Plus, in MN, nobody cares that you suck. It's a Vikings and Twins city. In Chicago, if Da Bulls aren't winning championships like they did in the 1990s, people crucify you. Thibs is one of the best coaches in the world according to everyone and has gotten a lot out of a broken down, unbalanced roster. And they still want to fire him for it!

Don't do it, Fred. What happened to Floyd will happen to you. That team isn't about to get better, completely misses your style, and doesn't have the ability to remake the roster before they would just fire you anyways. Just stay in Ames and be happy. Floyd and Earle Bruce said they should have stayed. Be the one who finally does and be the best story in sports forever.

I agree with all of this. Fred would be making a big mistake IMO going to the Bulls. It is a horribly run organization. Thibs has done an amazing job with all the injuries he's had to deal with over the years, and they are running him out of town.

The team is old and injured and is past their peak by several years. And that town will not put up with many bad years before they will run Fred out of town. They have no love or allegiance to Fred like Ames does. If they have one poor season, they will be all over him and screaming why they hired a guy with no NBA head coaching experience?

Fred can obviously do whatever he wants, but this would be a poor decision in my eyes. He's set up to fail there. DRose is a shell of himself. Gasol is declining. Noah is Noah.... head case idiot.

I disagree with this. They are going to get another high pick in the draft this season and are likely to get Towns or Okafor. That team will be pretty good in a few years. They have most of their roster for next season, and team options on most of it for the season after. Hoiberg taking over for the Timberwolves for the 2016/2017 season would be an ideal job for him, IMO. The Bulls, on the other hand, are a few years away from being in a rebuild mode, IMO.
