Re: REPORT: Alvin Gentry, not Fred Hoiberg, favorite to replace Tom Thibodeau

Because Pollard basically confirmed that he will be going to the NBA at some point. I would say the only way he doesn't go to the NBA is if things crash and burn at ISU or for health reasons, so rooting for him not to go to the NBA ends up being just as crappy as the alternative. Yeah, not the best place for us to be, I know...

I've stuck to this throughout this entire Hoibull saga that if we can survive this, Fred will be here as long as he is coaching.

Re: BLUM: The Mayor's dilemma

The Iowa media and for the most part ISU fans are easy on Fred. The Bull's job is one of the biggest in the NBA. With pressure from the fans and media to win. Fred also has 100% control of his program in Ames. In the NBA that wont be the case.

This. I laugh when people think the press is tough in Iowa. They are teddy bears compared to the how the writers savage the Timberwolves here in the Twin Cities. They even go out of their way to gore the sacred cows, The Wild and the Vikings.

And if he goes NBA he had better be ready for Twitter and talk radio stuff that will make the stuff about Matt Thomas seem like kids play. It will be millions of fans, not thousands like in Iowa.

People realize how much harder the west is than the east, right? Fred would have a MUCH harder road to a championship, hell, even the playoffs if he were to take the Minnesota job.

The T-Wolves job isn't good. It's just a matter of time before Wiggins requests a trade like every other superstar that's ever played there.

Re: BLUM: The Mayor's dilemma

You guys don't get what is being said, this is a self imposed pressure not a media one.

This is spot on. It is possible to care "too much" about a job to where it is a detriment to health. This happens to small business owners sometimes. When they realize what is happening, they might decide it is better to work for someone else's company where it can be just a job and not an obsession.

Do you realize how delusional this sounds? If Fred leaves it has nothing to do with that, it is just that he wanted to coach in the NBA.

Which is why I said it may be what keeps him here or drives him away.
Agree...there's pressure wherever you go. But if Fred thinks the Big 12 schedule is a grind (it is) That at least is only 18 games and not 82.

Are we really discussing if a loss here stings worse than a hypothetical loss there for Fred?

Yes I know how much more difficult the West is, but if they can keep their core of players while scoring a high pick this off-season, they can be a very good team soon. The Bulls on the other hand are going to be losing their core group of players, and that team could be in shambles in 2 years.

There are a ton of reasons the Minnesota job is better than the Bulls for Fred tho, he has been there before, he would have close personal friends in the front office, not to mention the expectations are minimal. I don't think either job is great, I just think T Wolves are a better fit for Fred and a more stable situation for anyone to come into.

Re: BLUM: The Mayor's dilemma

So I want to get this straight. Fred loves Iowa State so much that the pain of losing has become unbearable. So, in order to stop this pain caused by his tremendous love for ISU, he is going to rip it's fans heart out by taking a job in the NBA. Got it.

I agree. The T-Wolves are probably the team farthest away from championship contention in the NBA. They would need to absolutely hit this draft pick out of the park, get another top 3 pick next year, and hit on that as well. The Thunder managed to do it with KD, Westbrook, Harden but they're the only team I can remember ever having that sort of luck, and from what I've seen so far from Wiggins he's not going to be on any of those guys' level. LaVine still has a ton of work to do before he's a quality NBA player, and if they wind up outside the top 2 after the lottery I wouldn't be surprised if they traded him and/or Dieng to move up for one of the centers.

I think a move from ISU to the Wolves wouldn't be for AT LEAST 2 more years when they start to finish their tank cycle

It's kind of funny/sad that the main reason Thibs is getting fired is because he ignores all of the data that points to the huge spikes in injury prevalence for players playing above certain minute thresholds considering Flip Saunders in Minnesota runs all of his guys into the ground in meaningless games. But he can't be fired because he's his own boss. Like even Andrew Wiggins (their entire franchise at this point) was complaining about his knees towards the tail end of the season, yet Flip still had him out there finishing 4th quarters when they were down 20

It's a pretty good deal for the Bulls. He'll be much better at that job because he won't care near as much.

So... do you know how assistants get hired off? My very far flung hope is the reason we haven't heard antyhing about thibs yet is because they are going with Gentry, and Gentry doesn't want to say anything until after the playoffs/
